The 2 Parts to Every Sentence
  • Subject
  • Predicate
  • The subject of a sentence is what (or whom) it
    is about.
  • The predicate of a sentence tells something
    about the subject.

How do You Know???
Subjects
  • First find the verb and then make a question by
    placing who?'' or what?'' before it.

Examples
  1. The mighty blast of the foghorn was heard for
    miles.
  2. The story is Guy in a Basement
  3. Lou Gegrig, the famous baseball player, played in
    2,130 consecutive games.
  4. Hollywood, California, is the center of the film
    industry in the United States and, in a sense,
    the world.
  5. The students of Belize High School will enjoy an
    important advantage over other students of
    Belize.

  • Complete Subject
  • Complete Predicate
  • The complete subject consists of the simple
    subject and all of the words that modify or
    identify it.
  • The complete predicate consists of the simple
    predicate and all the words that modify or
    complete its meaning.

Sample Mrs. Eck and her staff will greet the
students every morning.

Compounding Matters
  • Compound Subject
  • Compound Predicate
  • A compound subject is a simple subject that has
    two or more nouns (or pronouns).
  • The compound predicate is a simple predicate
    that consists of two or more verbs (or verb
    phrases), linking to the same subject.

Sample Ms. Eck and her staff meet and greet
the students every morning.

  1. Jessica studied for the test and passed it with
    flying colors!
  2. Several pencils, some torn papers, and a box of
    paper clips lay on the table.
