National Compact Workshop Canberra 20 July 2009
  • Opening remarks
  • The National Compact is not only about creating
a strong, vibrant, independent and innovative
third sector. Even more importantly, it is also
about how we work together to create inclusive
    and resilient Australian communities..
  • The Compact is part of the governments wide
reaching third sector development agenda that
    includes significant commitments including the
Productivity Commissions review of the social
and economic contribution of the non-profit
sector in Australia and the ongoing work to
harmonise regulations and reduce red tape for the
sector through the Council of Australian
    Governments
  • The Compact has the potential to be a mechanism
for enabling transformational change in and for
the sector. We respect, value and affirm third
sector organisations and want to generate active
partnerships in the way in which we work together
    in the future.
  • Senator the Hon Ursula Stephens
  • Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion
    and the Voluntary Sector

  • Closing remarks
  • The Government is genuinely committed to this
process of developing a new, active, robust and
respectful relationship with the third sector in
Australia. You have been on this journey with us
now for nearly two years and the time is right
for us to shape a new way of working that
    respects the strengths, capacities and
responsibilities that each of us has to our
    stakeholders.
  • For third sector organisations, those
stakeholders are the wider community and include
some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged
within in our community. For government, you are
our stakeholders, so too are the citizens of
Australia, who have elected us to govern for the
future of the nation and to shape the nation for
the 21st century. We each strive do this
    responsibly, respectfully and legitimately.
  • The National Compact has the capacity to
transform the lives of individuals and
organisations in Australia. We owe it to them to
give this our best shot, to approach this process
with openness, sincerity, honesty and optimism
and to champion change that will deliver real
outcomes and stronger and engaged communities.
  • Senator Ursula Stephens
