Title: Writing and Sources

1
Writing and Sources
2
When and why do I have to refer to a source?
  • ALWAYS when the information is not general
knowledge, or your own opinions or conclusions
  • because you have to give credit to the person who
has come up with the idea/who has written the text

3
Different ways to use somebody elses
text/information
  • quotation
  • a. direct quotation
  • b. indirect quotation
  • 2. paraphrase
  • 3. summary

4
1. Quotations
  • Direct quotation means that you use somebody
    elses words directly
  • Saloranta (2005, p. 25) has said that English is
the most important subject at Sydväst Maritime.
  • You must use quotation marks!

5
You are not allowed to change anything, i.e. you
even make the same mistakes the writer has made
  • Bussman 2005 (p. 11) claims that starting the
engilsh (sic!) studies was a good decision.

6
b. Indirect quotation
  • You tell in your own words what the writer has
    said.
  • ... I dont bloody hell know when to find enough
time to do the English assignments. That woman is
    insane....
  • Sarén (2005, p. 10) says that he has difficulties
in his time management when it comes to the
English assignments. He also questions the sanity
    of the English teacher.

7
2. Paraphrase
  • means that you tell in your own words what the
    writer has said
  • the length of the original text and what you
    write is about the same

8
3. Summary
  • means that you summarize what the writer has said
  • the original text is (much) longer than what you
    write
  • you still have to use your own words

9
  • ALWAYS WHEN USING A QUOTATION,
  • A PARAPHRASE OR A SUMMARY YOU HAVE TO USE A
    REFERENCE (KÄLLHÄNVISNING, LÄHDEVIITE) IN THE
    TEXT.
  • YOU ALSO HAVE TO INCLUDE THE SOURCE YOU HAVE USED
    IN YOUR LIST OF SOURCES.
