Defining the project
1.1 Investigate sources of funding and obtain
relevant information
There are websites available that detail
government and other organisations grants.
Information is also available through Red Tape
Busters, Professional grant writers.
5
1.2 Identify the needs of the community
It is not just the organisation applying for the
grant that will be impacted by the grant funds.
Any project undertaken will affect the broader
community. It is essential to investigate this
broader impact to include in a grant application.
6
1.3 Identify the project's external and internal
resource requirements
Time will need to be invested into sourcing and
highlighting all external and internal resources
and their requirements. Will trades need to be
brought in to complete work? What can be achieved
at the organisations level? What resources will
everyone need?
7
1.4 Select strategies to meet needs
The problem needing to be solved needs to be
identified and a detailed strategic plan prepared
so it can be included in the grant application.
8
1.5 Formulate project goals
Clear and concise project goals will avoid all
confusion about the project when applying to the
funding body.
9
1.6 Identify and consult external and internal
stakeholders
Having input from all internal and external
stakeholders included in the grant writing
process helps define the project for the funding
body and cast a seriousness around the
application.
10
1.7 Seek feedback Seek feedback from the
stakeholders on project goals and make changes to
the project plan where required.

A detailed timeline of the project and Gantt
chart will allow all stakeholders to be aware of
all aspects of the project.

2.2 Assign personnel and material resources to
project activities
The right person for the right job and being
aware of all required resources will assist
putting forward a strong grant application.
13
2.3 Develop a budget for the project
Create a very clear and defined budget for the
project which falls within the funding
parameters. An accountants help would be
invaluable.
14
2.4 Select an approach to project evaluation
An accountability plan which details how the
project goals will be measured should be included
when grant writing.
15
2.5 The project plan must be approved and meet
the organisations requirements
Any council and local government permits, and
approvals must be meet and included.

have the grant application disqualified.

evidence
Ensure all documents relevant to the project and
the grant application are included and are easily
read through and understood.
18
3.3 Ensure the project plan mirrors the funding
requirements and the evaluation criteria
Check and check again that all requirements have
been addressed.

When grant writing, explain the project clearly.
