Negative Space becomes extremely important to a
carver. It opens or breaks up a solid form,
creating interest and visual flow. Negative
space allows the viewers eye to travel through
and around the piece.
6
Plaster is a material often used by sculptors for
casting, moldmaking, drying wet clay, etc. It is
often used for carving to imitate stone, such as
marble. It is much softer and lighter than most
stones and therefore, makes an effective
substitute.
7
Plaster mold. Artists create a negative, which
they can cast clay or paper inside to create the
positive.

Michelangelo David Gigantic marble, started in
1501 and completed in 1504 Michelangelo began
work on the colossal figure of David in 1501, and
by 1504 the sculpture (standing at 4.34m/14 ft 3
in tall) was in place outside the Palazzo
Vecchio. The choice of David was supposed to
reflect the power and determination of Republican
Florence and was under constant attack from
supporters of the usurped Medicis. In the 19th
century the statue was moved to the Accademia.
10
Michelangelo spoke of freeing forms that were
imprisoned in the marble he carved. He felt they
were inside, just waiting to be discovered.

Texture is another critical element to a carver.
In these works the contrast of the smooth
