Title: Edward de Bono
1Edward de Bonos
2Early in the 1980s Dr. Edward de Bono invented
the Six Thinking Hats method. The method is a
framework for thinking. It requires students
(and teachers), to extend their way of thinking
about a topic by wearing a range of different
thinking hats
3The six hats represent six modes of thinking and
are directions to think rather than labels for
thinking. That is, the hats are used proactively
rather than reactively.
4- Your students will use the Six Thinking Hats to
- Discuss topics
- Solve problems
- Explore alternatives
- Reach decisions
- Research, organise and write reports
- Brainstorming
5Six hats is a type of group work. In this
method you are asked to look at a problem from
different angles and use this to come to a
conclusion.
6 You need to use each hat to look at the problem.
7The hats are as follows
8White Hat pure facts, figures and information
9Red Hat seeing red, emotions and feelings, also
hunch and intuition
10Black Hat negative judgement, what is wrong with
the statement, or why it doesnt work?
11Yellow Hat positive judgement, constructive,
what is good about it?
12Green Hat creative, what could be changed or
done differently ?
13Blue Hat thinking about what you have already
discussed, what is your overall conclusion?
14You need to look at your question using each of
the hats. As a group, use one hat at a time.
15It is easiest to start with the white hat and
work your way down to the blue hat. Always do
the blue hat last.
