    SHOW and TELL
  • The signs symptoms of shock and how to treat
    them.
  • How to make two different types of stretchers for
    moving casualties.

3
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • The skills that you will be learning will be put
to the test at the end of the session when you
will have to treat the casualties of the plane
    crash.
  • So keep focused and help each other as you work
    through the tasks.

4
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • Firstly it is important to understand what the
    two Ss mean.
  • SIGNS what you can see on the casualty
  • SYMPTOMS what the casualty tells you
  • These will affect they way you treat the
    casualty!

5
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • SHOCK
  • is the failure of the circulatory system
(heart, blood, blood vessels) leading to a lack
of blood and oxygen to vital organs e.g. heart,
lungs, brain, kidneys and liver. Shock can be
    FATAL.

6
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • SHOCK SIGNS
  • Pale or grey skin
  • Being sick
  • There may be major bleeding
  • Shallow rapid breaths
  • May loose consciousness

7
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • SHOCK SYMPTOMS
  • Thirsty
  • Anxious
  • Faint / giddy
  • Weak / feeble

8
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • SHOCK TREATMENT
  • If possible treat reason for shock i.e. bleeding
    (another group is learning this!)
  • Lay casualty down
  • Raise legs
  • Preserve body heat
  • Do not give food or drink as this WILL cause
    vomiting

9
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • Treating shock can save lives.
  • With a partner practice the treatment for shock.

10
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • After a major incident such as a plane crash it
can be vitally important to move causalities
quickly and safely away from the incident site.
  • You are now going to learn how to make two
    different types of stretcher
  • Improvised stretcher
  • Rope stretcher

11
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • As a large group using the following equipment
    make an improvised stretcher.
  • 2 poles
  • 2 coats
  • Top tip! Pull the arms through the jackets so
that they run along the inside of the body, now
    thread the poles through.

12
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • Make sure that everyone in the group has had a go
on the stretcher. Work together as a group to
lift the casualty. Remember to bend your knees!
  • You may wish to refine your stretcher by thinking
about the arrangement of the jackets.

13
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • However sometimes you
  • do not have poles but you
  • have a rope.
  • Working with the person who has the same coloured
sticker as you (yellow, blue, orange) use the
green card and 1 length of rope to make a rope
    stretcher.
  • If you have any questions please ask!

14
FIRST AID GROUP 4
  • When you have finished making the rope stretcher
come back together and try the stretchers out.
  • Call Miss Sinden over.
  • Then dismantle your stretcher.
