Confirmation of Candidature

• PhD Milestones - Confirmation
• Who? All students enrolled in a PhD and those
  students wanting to articulate from a Research
  Masters to a PhD, or from a Professional
  Doctorate to a PhD
• Where is the information/guidelines?

• What is it? The process consists of
• A seminar held in your faculty
• A detailed proposal to the review panel within
  the faculty
• A reporting form with attachments that go to the
  Research Degrees Committee from the review panel
• When do you do it?
• 12 months after beginning your candidature
  (full-time)
• 24 months after beginning your candidature
  (part-time)

• Why? To confirm your capability to complete
  your research higher degree.
• This seminar demonstrates that you are a
  competent research student at a PhD level
• It shows that the project you are doing is an
  appropriate one for a PhD level
• Based on the timeline provided you have a
  reasonable chance to complete within the 3 year
  period.

• Check out the dates for RDC meetings and plan
  accordingly If you wont be able to make the
  date for your confirmation seminar you must apply
  for an extension one month prior to this date

• Seminar documents must be submitted (one to

• Of the 1581 current HRD students 9 are under
  review
• In 2005 211 students completed confirmation and 2
  were put under review.
• What to do if you are put under review?
• Complete listed requirements
• Listen to advice
• Seek assistance
• Actively seek critique, comment and collegial
  advice

What are you trying to achieve?

• A Doctor of Philosophy is someone who takes a
  new/different perspective to a problem, issue or
  a reflection on practice. They write well and
  most importantly they research well. A PhD is all
  about creating a really good argument that is a
  good read. In Australia, it is a unique writing
  genre.

What are your responsibilities?

• Talk with your supervisor arrange meetings
• Know the policies and procedures relating to your
  degree
• Maintain a schedule of background
  reading/literature review
• Attend any coursework suggested by your
  supervisor
• Participate in scholarly activities
• Strive to design a research program which is
  intellectually challenging and of sufficient
  scope to allow a significant original
  contribution of knowledge to be made, but focused
  enough to permit completion within about three
  years (full-time) of commencement
• Develop planning skills and to plan and achieve
  early targets
• Be confident that when it comes to Confirmation
  of Candidature you will be successful
