Goal and Objectives
  • Goal To obtain input for a project to mobilize
    professional societies for TB care and control
  • Objectives
  • review briefly the results of ISTC pilot tests
  • describe potential roles of societies
  • present ideas and questions for a project to be
    proposed to TBCAP
  • set the stage for the breakout group Mobilizing
    national professional associations for TB control

ISTC Focus of a Global Campaign
  • Intends to unite public and private sectors in
    providing a uniformly accepted level of care
  • Describes the essential elements of TB care that

    societies globally in support of TB programs
  • Serves as a powerful advocacy tool to ensure that
    the essential elements are available
  • Provides support for The Patients Charter for

  • ATS-WHO collaboration (as with ISTC)
  • Preliminary ideas (for input from group)
  • Goal to foster effective collaborations between
    NTPs and private providers.
  • Rationale Professional societies provide a
    systematic means of engaging private providers.
  • Process
  • WHO and NTPs to identify most relevant (and
    willing) professional societies in HBCs (and ?
    others) to be the lead organization.
  • Initiated with a full day session as part of DEWG
    meeting at the Union conference in October.

  • Seek agreement to form coalitions of societies
    using model of India and Indonesia
  • Present/discuss the outlines (possible
    components) of a work plan.
  • Provide grants (? up to10,000) to fund work plan
    during year 1.
  • Provide TA for work plan development and
    implementation
  • Review progress/accomplishments at Union meeting
    in 2009
  • Seek country-level funding after first year.

    International Respiratory Societies ATS, ERS,
    ALAT, APSR, ACCP, PATS, The Union)
  • How many societies should be involved?
  • How can technical assistance be provided?
  • How can/should a focus on professional societies
    be maintained beyond the project?
