3
Why IPv6?
  • IPv4 addresses are effectively being rationed and
will likely run out by 2008-2010
  • The shortage is hidden by the proliferation of
NATs which allow re-use of addresses.
  • Internet in 2005 is in dire need of permanent
addresses and peer 2 peer communications and
faces the same growth bottleneck as telephony
    back in the 1920s

4
Why IPv6?
  • Main compelling reason more IP addresses!
  • for billions of new users (Japan, China, India,)
  • for billions of new devices (mobile phones, cars,
    appliances,)
  • for always-on access (cable, xDSL,
    ethernet-to-the-home,)
  • for applications that are difficult, expensive,
or impossible to operate through NATs (IP
    telephony, peer-to-peer gaming, home servers,)
  • to phase out NATs to improve the robustness,
security, performance, and manageability of the
    Internet

5
Why IPv6?
  • What if we do not migrate to IPv6?
  • We will be isolated from the global network as
others are already migrating and running on IPv6
  • Deadline to migrate to IPv6
  • The government has set its target to migrate to
    IPv6 by end of 2008
  • NAv6 will be working with MAMPU to provide IPv6
    consultancy
  • With proper planning and training the migration
can be carried out in a constructive manner.
  • The migration being left to the industries alone
will be slow and steady government can
influence this and speed the migration process

6
Any Urgency?
  • Soon, most websites will migrate to IPv6
  • those people who are still running on IPv4 will
face difficulties to access to the v6 enabled
    sites.
  • US Defense is using IPv6 as defacto now
  • We will be left behind as other governments are
    already migrating to IPv6
  • Countries such as Australia, China, Korea, Japan,
India and US are already migrating to IPv6

7
NAv6 Centre
  • The National Advanced IPv6 Centre works
  • towards
  • Promoting IPv6 research, development and
    utilization
  • in Malaysia.
  • Conducting studies and monitors the impact of the
protocol transition particularly for Malaysia and
monitor regional development. This is to ensure
Malaysia's competitive edge in this area.
  • Committing to continuous research, experiment and
development of new applications as well as the
porting of existing applications to the new IPv6
    specifications.
  • Providing the necessary environment and course
structures to train and nurture IPv6 programmers
and experts for Malaysia and the region.

    to
  • Create awareness upon local industries
  • Create awareness internationally
  • Create awareness in government and private
    sectors
  • Workshops and seminars would be the main thrust
in the IPv6 awareness and promotion campaign. The
Training and Human Resource team will work
closely with Awareness and Promotion team to
ensure a standard idea is spread to the intended
    group.

15
NAv6 Programs

    and
  • deployment in Malaysia. In doing so, NAv6 will be
    holding
  • programs such as below
  • Monitoring National IPv6 Addressing Scheme
  • Monitoring of IPv6 Migration by Government
    Departments and General Public
  • Monitoring of Implementation and Usage of IPv6
    Network Infrastructures in Malaysia

Strategies for Malaysias E-Government Network
  • Couple the IPv6 address allocations together with
    the national broadband rollout.
  • Every new broadband connection by Q4 must be V4
    and V6 address compliant.
  • Port the website for MYcrystal and other
government websites to have special sections just
for those who are v6 enabled. This will encourage
    people to use v6.
  • Mycard MUST be IPv6 enabled and must have an
    IPv6 address.
  • MYREN Must be fully V6 compliant by end of Q2,
    2005.

20
Strategies for Malaysias E-Government Network
(cont)
  • All large scale new government network projects
    must be IPv6 compliant.
  • All net schools be immediately allocated with
IPv6 addresses and IPv6 compliant modems.
  • New local content development must be IPv4/v6
dual stack ready. Thus increasing local content
and encouraging v6. Cost of development can be
    subsidized by Government grants.
  • Note Affordability - Very.
  • Little cost to Government agencies and to
telcos if proper planning is done.

21
Strategies for Malaysias E-Government Network
(cont)
  • NAv6 can assist in auditing those government
agencies to see their compliance in IPv6
  • NAv6 can also assist in planning and developing
tender specs for government agencies to check
    their IPv6 compliance
  • Incentives to those government agencies that have
    converted to IPv6
  • Certification to equipment that is IPv6 compliant
    can be given by NAv6
  • Provide ISP Training in setting up IPv6 networks
for the government Ministry CIOs and technical
    staffs.

22
NAv6 Assistance in Malaysias IPv6 Deployment
  • NAv6 shall monitor the overall IPv6 development
    in
  • Malaysia by holding programs such as below
  • Monitoring National IPv6 Addressing Scheme for
    Universities and RD institutions
  • Monitoring of IPv6 Migration by Government
    Departments and General Public
  • Monitoring of Implementation and Usage of IPv6
    Network Infrastructures in Malaysia
  • Monitoring the security of IPv6 Networks
  • Auditing and certifying v6 network equipments
  • Conduct training in setting up IPv6 networks for
the government Ministry CIOs and technical staffs
  • Provide consultancy in IPv6
  • Assisting in IPv6 Business Cases

23

28
Conclusion
  • NAv6 centre would make Malaysia one of the
leading countries in this region, providing
support and consultancy expertise to neighbouring
    countries.
  • The commercial community needs to be prepared for
this transition in order to keep abreast with the
    latest technology advancement
  • Failure to do so would result lost of competitive
edge for Malaysia in the ICT as well as
    commercial world.
