Title: The Principles of Design

1
The Principles of Design
  • for 3D art

2
They are
  • Harmony
  • Variety
  • Balance
  • Proportion
  • Economy
  • Movement

3
HARMONY/UNITY
  • Agreement accord. A union or blend of
    aesthetically compatible components.
  • Refers to a way of combining elements of art to
accent their similarities and bind the parts into
    a whole.
  • It is often achieved through the use of
    repetition and simplicity.

4
  • A way to get people to look at the WHOLE piece,
instead of having ONE particular area be
    dominant
  • Use of LINE/SHAPE leading the eye in directions
and towards other lines/shapes, and EXTENSIONS

VARIETY
  • refers to a way of combining elements of art in
involved ways to achieve intricate and complex
    relationships
  • Variety is often obtained through the use of
diversity and change by artists who wish to
increase the visual interest of their work
  • An artwork which makes use of many different
hues, values, lines, textures, and shapes would
reflect the artist's desire for variety

7
What we want..
  • Is a DELICATE balance between HARMONY and VARIETY
  • We dont want boring, but we dont want too much
    that just doesnt work together
  • Thats the challenge!!!!!!!!!!!!

8
BALANCE
  • refers to the way the elements of art are
arranged to create a feeling of stability in a
work a pleasing or harmonious arrangement or
proportion of parts or areas in a design or
    composition
  • Deal with WEIGHT and DOMINANCE
  • THREE types
  • Symmetrical - organized so that one side
    duplicates, or mirrors, the other
  • Asymmetrical - when one side of a composition
does not reflect the design of the other
  • Radial - based on a circle with its design
extending from or focused upon its center.

PROPORTION
  • Relationship of the parts to the whole
  • Usually dealing with the human figure
  • Can also deal with SIZE
  • If have a bunch of people in a picture/sculpture,
and one is larger than the rest, it is said to be
out of PROPORTION and is given greater importance
    due to its size.
