What is the SAT?

• The Stanford Achievement Test, Tenth Edition is a
  multiple choice assessment that measures student
  progress toward high academic standards in
  reading and math.

Who takes the SAT?

• All first and second graders, including ESOL and
  ESE students take the SAT.
• Special considerations are made for ESOL and ESE
  students.

When is the SAT?

• The SAT will be administered March 18th through
  the 24th.
• The testing schedule is attached to your packets.

How long is the SAT?

• The reading portion is 40 minutes long and its
  timed.
• The math portion is not timed since the problems
  are read orally by the teacher.

Ways to Help at Home

• Read independently for at least 30 minutes each
  day.
• Provide a wide variety of texts.
• Use Question Task cards to design questions to
  enhance comprehension.
• Encourage rereading for comprehension.
• Encourage returning to the text to find answers
  to questions.
• Use Graphic Organizers to help organize thinking.

Why is independent reading important?

• Independent reading promotes fluency, enhances
  reading comprehension, expands vocabulary,
  develops background knowledge, provides a model
  for good writing and promotes reading as a
  lifelong activity.

Independent Reading Tips

• Independent reading is when students are reading
  on their own or with a partner at their
  independent reading level.
• Check to make sure your child is reading at his
  or her independent reading level with the Five
  Finger Method. Have your child raise one finger
  for each word they dont know. If there are five
  unknown words on a page, the book is probably too
  hard. If your child doesnt raise any fingers,
  the book is readable but may be too easy.

EncourageAccelerated Reader

• Accelerated Reader is a software program designed
  to enhance reading practice. It motivates
  students to read at their independent level
  through a point system, while challenging them to
  read harder material.

Provide a Wide Variety of Texts

• Folk tales
• Poetry
• Chapter books
• Fables
• Magazines
• Newspapers
• Cartoons
• Biographies

• Subscribe to childrens magazines such as
  Highlights, Time for Kids, Scholastic News, etc.
  to expose them to a variety of genre.

Math

• The questions on the Math portion of the SAT are
  read orally by the teacher. The students test
  booklet contain only the multiple choice
  responses.
• The material on the SAT Math section will include
  concepts and skills taught throughout the school
  year.

More Helpful Tips

• Make sure your child does the following
• Completes the practice materials that will be
  provided.
• Gets plenty of sleep the night before the test.
• Has breakfast on the morning of the tests.
• Gets to school on time on the day of the tests.
• Brings a sweater.
• Knows that you think he/she will do well on the
  tests.

Congratulations!

• Reward your child for trying hard on the tests.
• Discuss strategies that were helpful and discuss
  ways to improve in the coming years.

Results

• SAT results will be sent home in at the end of
  the school year with the last report card.
• Students who score below 45 on either Reading
  or Math will automatically be enrolled in summer
  school. Also, these students will be monitored
  closely and extra support will be provided
  throughout the following school year.
