- Childhood Obesity Major U.S. Health Concern

ago - Significant risk factor for chronic disease
3PROGRAM GOALS
- To reduce childhood obesity risk factors for 5th
graders in Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, and Los Alamos
County by - Increasing nutrition knowledge
- Increasing fruit and vegetable intake
- Increasing activity level
4JBI Program
- The JBI program contains basic elements to
reduce the risks of obesity for children.
5DELIVERY METHODS
- Nutrition and Fitness Field Trip
- Classroom Instruction
- Parent Outreach
6Nutrition Fitness Field Trip
- Students participate in four 45-minute
workshops. Each workshop is aligned to the New
Mexico Health Education Standards and
Benchmarks. - 2445 students have participated in the Nutrition
and Fitness Field Trip in the three years it has
taken place. -
7Just Be It! Jeopardy
- Provides introduction to days activities.
- Introduces students to nutrition concepts they
will be learning during the day. - Questions reinforce concepts asked on the pre and
post test.
8MyPyramid Workshop
- Introduces students to the MyPyramid system.
- Illustrates what a serving size is within each
food group. - Students learn how the nutrients affect their
bodies and contribute to good health.
9Vary Your Veggies Focus on Fruits Workshop
- Students learn about the nutritional qualities of
vegetables and fruits. - Children set goals to eat more fruits and
vegetables.
10Fun with Food Workshop
- Students learn how to read Nutrition Fact Labels,
and how to compare food products. - Introduces students to the effects Media has on
eating habits. -
11Power Up With Exercise
- Young people need 60minutes of exercise each
day. - In this workshop students learn about the 3
types of exercise - Aerobic Training
- Strength Training
- Flexibility
12Field Trip Evaluation Results 2007-2008
- Pre and post test scores indicated that students
participating in the day long field trip had a
32 increase in knowledge. - Validity and reliability for the nutrition
knowledge test was established. The test has 16
multiple choice questions.

16Classroom Instruction
- The Just Be It! Classroom Component provides
bi-weekly nutrition and fitness instruction from
October to May.
- Classes are selected before Field Trip

In the 2006-2009 school year 22 classrooms and
450 students and their families were reached
through in-class instruction and Parent

22Classroom Instruction Evaluation Results 2007-2008
- Students increased their nutrition knowledge.
- Pretest score was 8.8 (55) and post test score
was 14.9 (93). Knowledge gain was 6.1 (38). - Statistically significant difference in knowledge
test scores (p.0001).

- Parents reported knowing more about nutrition
after they read the take home newsletters. - Pretest average score was 74 and post test score
was 90. Knowledge gain was 16 .
