  building in NYC

Up, Up, and Away

• 1903-Orville and Wilbur Wright developed the
  first aircraft.
• The first flight lasted roughly 12 seconds.

CHEEEEESE

• George Eastman created flexible film and portable
  cameras
• In 1888, a Kodak camera cost 25 and included a
  100 picture roll of film

Expanding Education

• By 1900 more than 500k students attended high
  school.
• Fewer than 1 of black teens went to HS

Booker T

• Booker T. Washington founded the Tuskegee
  Institute in 1881, that stressed a vocational
  education
• W.E.B. Du Bois Niagara Movement stressed liberal
  arts

Segregation

• Some states required a poll tax to vote
• Jim Crow laws segregated the American south
• Plessy V. Ferguson- separate but equal

Violence

• Between 1882 and 1892 more than 1,400 black
  citizens were burnt, shot, hanged, and killed
  with no trial
• Mexicans and Chinese were also mistreated
  throughout the west

On the brighter side

• Amusement parks like Coney Island sprang up
• Biking and tennis gained popularity
• Coca-cola was sold as a cure for headaches and
  made with cocoa leaves

Americas Pastime is born

• Baseball quickly became popular in big cities
• Teams like the Red Stockings began to travel and
  leagues were formed
• Blacks were forced to play in the Negro League

• William Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer had a
  newspaper war in NYC
• Mark Twains novels were very popular

The Birth of the American Shopper

• Department, chain, and catalogue stores also
  became popular.
• Sears and Montgomery Ward sold items through mail
  order
