The 5 Themes of Geography
3
Why use 5 Themes of Geography?
  • Geography is the study of Earth.
  • Geographers are guided by two basic questions
  • 1. Where are things located?
  • 2. Why are they there?
  • The 5 Themes of Geography help answer these
    questions and organize information.

4
Theme 1
LOCATION
  • Location is finding WHERE an area is, or its
    location

5
Absolute Location
  • Absolute location is an areas exact position.
  • This can be given by a street address or by
using lines of latitude and longitude.

6
Absolute Location examples
  • Street address Aylen Jr. High
  • 101 15th Street SW
  • Puyallup, WA 98371
  • Latitude longitude Puyallup, Washington, 47N,
    122W
  • Both examples tell you exactly where an area is
    located.

7
Relative Location
  • Relative location tells where an area is by
    describing other areas near it.
  • This can be described by landmarks, time,
direction, or distance from another area.

8
Relative Location examples
  • Orting is near Mount Rainier
  • Seattle is about 45 minutes by car from Puyallup
  • Puyallup is southeast of Tacoma
  • Puyallup is 30 miles south of Seattle

9
Theme 2
Place
  • Place is the NATURAL and HUMAN features that are
    unique to an area.
  • Place is a description of what an area is LIKE,
    not where it is.

10
Place Natural Features
  • Natural features are the physical characteristics
unique to an area as determined by nature.
  • They include things like climate, mountains,
rivers, valleys, forests, plants, wildlife, and
    much more.
  • Example Downtown Puyallup is on a river valley
surrounded by hills on two sides.

11
Place Human Features
  • Human features are an areas unique
characteristics that come from the actions of
    people.
  • This includes buildings, roads, clothing, foods,
    employment, culture, traditions, and more.
  • Example Disneyland is an area with many thrill
    rides, dressed-up characters, and unique
    buildings.

12
Theme 3
HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION
  • Human-environment interaction is the relationship
between people and their natural surroundings
    (environment).

13
Theme 3 Human-Environment Interaction
  • Answers important questions
  • How does the environment affect people?
  • How do people affect their environment?
  • What are the consequences (good bad) of
    peoples actions?
  • How people depend on the environment?

14
How does the environment affect people?
  • Environment affects how people live, work, dress,
    and travel.
  • This is called adaptation
  • Examples include wearing a rain coat in Seattle
    or light clothing in Phoenix.
  • Using a camel for transportation in the Sahara
desert or a snowmobile in Alaska.

15
How do people affect their environment?
  • The way people change their environment to suit
    themselves.
  • Examples include building things like power
plants, roads, dams, or landfills also doing
things like forestry, irrigation, and producing
    electricity.

16
What are the consequences of peoples actions?
  • Sometimes these can be good, such as irrigation
    can help grow crops.
  • Sometimes these can be bad, such as coal burning
power plants adding to greenhouse gasses.
  • Sometimes these can be both good and bad.

17
How people depend on the environment?
  • Examples include using trees for paper and lumber
  • Rivers for water and electricity
  • Natural resources like coal, oil, and natural gas
  • Can you imagine life without depending on the
    environment?
  • (No homes, electricity, water, or gasoline)

18
Theme 4
MOVEMENT
  • Movement explains how people, goods, and ideas
get from one area to another area.
  • All these can create cultural changes.

19
People Move
  • PEOPLE move and travel from place to place for
    many reasons.
  • This helps explain changes such as foods,
    fashions, and fads.
  • Where is your family from?

20
Goods Move
  • GOODS are moved from place to place through
    imports exports.
  • We live in a Global Economy.
  • What countries do you read on made in labels?

21
Ideas Move
  • IDEAS are communicated from place to place?
  • This can be done through television, books, mail,
    telephones, and computers.
  • How has the internet changed how ideas move?

22
Theme 5
REGIONS
  • Regions are areas that can be grouped together by
a set of things special to that area.
  • Unifying characteristics may include climate,
    land, population, culture, or history.

23
Examples of Regions
  • Countries, states, and cities are examples of
    political regions.
  • Western Washington is in the Marine-West Coast
    climate region.
  • Puyallup is in the Puget Sound lowlands region.

24
Regions
  • An area can be part of several regions at the
    same time.
  • Example Hawaii is part of the United States
political region, tropical climate region, and
    Polynesian cultural region.

25
Regions
  • Example Toyko, Japan and Detroit, Michigan are
alike. They are both automobile manufacturing
    regions.
  • Regions can change over time due to changes in
    climate, economic conditions, accessibility of
trade routes, and many other factors.

26
How smart are you?
  • Now that you have all this fantastic knowledge
and super notes about the 5 Themes of Geography,
how well do you think youll do on a quiz?
  • Your note taking skills are the KEY to future
    success!
