1Charting GVUs Future
- Elizabeth Mynatt
- Director
- GVU CenterCollege of ComputingGeorgia
Techwww.gvu.gatech.edu
2In the beginning (around 1991)
- Jim Foleys vision gave us the Graphics,
Visualization, and Usability Center - This initial mission represented the outward
focus of Computing - Interdisciplinary research center with faculty
from Computing, Psychology, LCC, Architecture,
and Engineering
3But we grew
- Graphics became how to make photorealistic
images animation added as fundamental question. - Visualization added information vis, not just
scientific VR and AR become significant. - Computer Vision (its just pixels anyway) and
the connection between vision and graphics. Then
robotics. - Traditional HCI gives way to Everyday and
Ubiquitous computing interfaces. - Focus on pragmatic tasks extended to include
expression and content.
4GVU Mission
- We create interactive computing technologies
that enable people to change their world.
5How
6Structure
- GVU is a university-wide research center
dedicated to interdisciplinary research that
examines the impact of computing in all walks of
human life. - Enable great research
- Help with the why
- Help with the who
- Provide resources
- Tell the world
