Since last meeting
  • We want to get started with the ballot process
ASAP ("but no sooner"), and that we also want to
have a starting document that is as good as
possible ("but no better"). We don't want to
delay ballot forever, so as to start with a
perfect document, nor do we want to rush into
    ballot with an immature document.

10
Since last meeting
  • Document and XSD
  • http//www.cs.kuleuven.ac.be/erikd/LOM/
  • Finalized document on January, 31st
  • Added substantial redundancy
  • No known problems with XSD
  • Or maybe ? ?
  • Submitted to IEEE on February, 17th
  • Requested pre-ballot review

Thanks to ? apologies if I forgot you ?

for funding), Boyd Nielsen, Lassi Nirhamo, Claude
Ostyn, Dan Rehak, Steve Sarapata, Schawn Thropp
  • Christian Klaue
  • Sam Dooley no changes are needed for the LOM
schema, but the references in the LOM information
model should really be updated LOM1.x?

Invitation to ballot
14
Invitation to ballot
  • Remember, anyone may ballot IEEE Standards.
However, if you are not a member of the IEEE
    Standards Association (IEEE-SA), you may
participate by either becoming a member or with
the payment of a per-ballot fee.
  • If you are interested in participating in this
electronic ballot, you must respond by
2003-03-29, 1159 PM Eastern Time by filling out
    the web-based form at http//standards.ieee.org/cg
    i-bin/bsignup/0000474

15
Invitation to ballot
  • The IEEE requires that a minimum of 75 of the
balloting group return their ballots for the
ballot to be valid. As such, by agreeing to
participate in this ballot you have an obligation
to respond. Failure to return a completed
ballot may disqualify you from participating in
    future ballots.

16
Dans word of warning
  • FYI -- The IEEE Standards Association mail with
the ballot invitation for 1484.12.3 was flagged
by spamassin as spam. Depending on how your mail
is filtered, you may not get it.

IEEE editor feedback - definitions
  • Don Messina
  • IEEE Standards Project Editor
  • Regarding Definitions
  • If possible IEEE 100 should be used as the source
for all your definitions however, if that is not
possible or applicable to your draft please
remember that acronyms shall not be defined in
the definition clause. Each definition shall be a
brief, self-contained description of the term in
question. The term shall not be used in its own
    definition.
  • The two definitions for LOM and the two for XML
should both be rewritten according to the above
    IEEE style requirements for definitions.

20
IEEE editor feedback - definitions
  • LOM definition in doc
  • learning object metadata (LOM) data element A
data element for which the name, explanation,
size, ordering, value space, and data type are
    defined in this Standard.
  • learning object metadata (LOM) data model A data
    model defined in IEEE 1414.12.12000.
  • XML definitions in current doc
  • XML binding A set of requirements and or
constraints for building an XML representation of
    a particular data model.
  • XML binding instance A particular XML
representation of the data model that adheres to
the requirements and/or constraints of the XML
    binding of the data model.

21
IEEE editor feedback - figures
  • I have some concern about the layout of the
figures of code. Since some figures carry over to
multiple pages we might have to consider
alternative ways of displaying them. This is an
editorial and publishing issue not technical
however, if you could supply figures that that
did not exceed one page that would be helpful.
Figures that need to broken could be renamed, for
example, as Figure 1a and Figure 1b. The Working
Group knows best where the code should be broken.
Again, if these figures could be resized to fit
on a single page it would expedite the formatting
    process.
  • At the time of RevCom submittal please submit all
graphics as separate files in either Tiff, JPEG,
    or EPS format.

22
And also
  • http//rubens.cs.kuleuven.ac.be8989/ariadne/
  • 3259 LOM instances
  • 5.1 MB
  • XML generated off the ARIADNE Knowledge Pool
    System
  • Other takers?
