Title: Overview of Batch standards

1
Overview ofBatch standards Plant optimisation
This presentation offers a short overview of the
application domains of the S88, S95 and MES
standards for the batch industry. It is a
product of the Batch Knowledge Centre.

Four levels of plant optimisation can be
distinguished Process Optimisation on the lowest
level, Site Optimisation, Enterprise-wide
Optimisation and Chain, Network or Cluster
Optimisation.

Process optimisation
ISA - S88.01 - 1995 Batch Control Standard -
Models and Terminology
  • Physical model ? Process cell
  • Recipe model
  • Control activity model

The S88 Batch Control Standard of ISA covers the
process optimisation level. In this standard a
physical model, recipe model and control activity
model are defined. For more information you may
view the S88 web tutorials.

Site optimisation
MES Manufacturing Execution Systems
  • manage for a single site or one or more areas
  • Materials
  • Equipment
  • Personnel

Manufacturing Execution Systems manage for a
single site or one or more areas within a site
materials, equipment and personnel. The ISA - S88
standard touches the MES level. The ISA - S95
standard addresses the enterprise-control
integration.
5
Manufacturing Execution Systems ...
  • optimise production activities
  • focus on the value-adding processes
  • reduce manufacturing cycle time
  • improve product quality
  • reduce or eliminate paperwork
  • reduce lead time, etc.

Manufacturing Execution Systems deliver
information enabling the optimisation of
production activities from order launch to
finished goods. They focus on the value-adding
processes, help to reduce manufacturing cycle
time, improve product quality, reduce or
eliminate paperwork between shifts and reduce
lead time, etc.
6
MES of particular value to operational management
  • Functions of MES include
  • resource allocation and status
  • dispatching production units
  • data collection/acquisition
  • quality management
  • maintenance management
  • performance analysis
  • operations/detail scheduling
  • document control
  • labor management
  • process management
  • product tracking and genealogy

The MESA has defined eleven functions of a
Manufacturing Execution System. Definitions and
more information can be found at www.mesa.org.

Part 1 Models and Terminology Part 2 Data
Structures and Attributes Part 3 Models of
Manufacturing Operations
The S95 standard of ISA consists of three parts.
Part 1 is a dictionary of common terms in IT and
Manufacturing. Part 2 adds more details and
examples to explain and illustrate the objects
defined in Part 1. Part 3 contents are deeply
rooted in PERA and MESA international functional
models.

Framework of S95 Part 1
Business Planning Logistics
Manufacturing Operations Control
Functions within the MES domain (e.g. Quality
management, etc.)
The black circles denote the functions that are
detailed in S95. The white circles denote
functions that are not detailed in S95. De green
lines are data flows detailed in S95, the dotted
green lines are data flows not detailed in S95.
For more information you may view the S95 web
tutorials.

Integration and optimisation of all the
enterprise-wide activities ask for a new type of
control engineers and an enterprise-wide culture
change.

A New ChallengeChain, network or cluster
optimisation
  • How to design a flexible infrastructure between
the various parts of a chain or a network ?
  • How to satisfy the objectives and constraints ?
  • frequent changes in the quality of feedstock
  • customer-related quality requirements
  • tracing, etc?
  • What determines the type and the level of
    integration?
