Title: Burrowing Owls Endangered

1
Burrowing Owls (Endangered)
2
Description of the burrowing owl
  • Small, tiny owl
  • 15-25 centimeters from head to tail
  • Bright, yellow eyes with white eyebrows
  • Weighs 170 grams
  • Beak can be yellow or green
  • Legs are long and grayish
  • No ear tufts
  • Spots on the back

3
Habitat
  • Can be found in grasslands, ranchlands and other
    dry areas
  • Nests in burrows
  • Lives in Canada
  • Migrates to Mexico
  • Uses badgers, or groundhogs burrows to live in

4
How they are becoming endangered?
  • Their habitat is getting taken over by roads,
grain fields, buildings, and oil sites.
  • There are less badgers and groundhogs because
farmers are killing them. This affects Burrowing
owls since they do not build their own burrows.
Therefore, badgers and groundhogs help them.
  • Even though burrowing owls are predators, they
are not at the top of the food chain. It means
that other predators can eat them.
  • They are also going on the road and getting
    killed by careless drivers.

What west Dalhousie school is doing to help
  • Mr. Messer and Ms. Viitalas class are trying to
save burrowing owls so they wont be extinct in
the next twenty years. We are trying to raise
money so that Burrowing owls can have a better
life. Some people suggested to have bake sales,
fundraisers, or put posters around the school so
other students are informed that Burrowing owls
are endangered. We can help by teaching other
people to try not to do things that might harm
Burrowing owls. Please try to support the
Burrowing owl by sending this to as many people
    you know.

How we can protect the burrowing owl
  • We can protect the Burrowing owl by driving
    carefully on highways.
  • Try to get rid of pests another way instead of
    using pesticide.
  • Give Burrowing owls space to hunt.
  • Stop creating pollution try walking to a close
    destination instead of driving.
  • Let other people know so they can help.
