  • A look at the unique habitat and wildlife of
    Kiowa County

Introduction
  • Kiowa County offers a wide variety of habitat and
    wildlife providing numerous activities such as
    bird watching, fishing, hunting, and other
    outdoor recreation. What characterizes the
    county is the abundant amount of wildlife for
    hunting and fishing which attracts people from
    all over the United States.

  • There are all types of habitats in Kiowa County
    including wetlands, reservoirs, creeks,
    grassland, and different types of farmland.

Jacksons Pond
  • Jacksons Pond is located south of Eads providing
    a nice habitat for wildlife and recreational
    fishing. Many people come to see the wide
    variety of birds and the scenic land.

Great Plains Reservoirs
  • The Great Plains Reservoirs including Nee Grande,
    Nee Noshe, Upper and Lower Queens provide
    hunting, fishing, and camping attracting people
    from all over the state.

Blue Lake
  • Blue Lake is located just south of Haswell,
    Colorado and offers outdoor recreation and is
    known for having man- size catfish. The water
    level is low, but during a wet year the lake is
    very large.

Bird Watching
  • Eads and Kiowa County contains a wide variety of
    birds and attracts birdwatchers from many states.
    The birds are found throughout the wetlands south
    of Eads, the Great Plains Reservoirs, and all
    over the county.

Bird Watching
  • The least tern, piping plover, mountain plover,
    snowy plover, lesser prairie chickens and
    burrowing owls are threatened or endangered
    species which are found in various habitats in
    the county.  Bald and golden eagles and the
    largest wintering population of lesser snow geese
    in Colorado are found on the reservoirs. 
    Canadian geese and other waterfowl also winter in
    the area. Lesser sand hill cranes are fall and
    spring visitors.

Hunting
  • Kiowa County offers a wide variety of hunting
    ranging from deer, antelope, coyotes, geese,
    ducks, pheasants, quail, dove, turkey, and
    others. Most hunting areas is private land but
    there are a couple of outfitters that will guide
    hunters.
  • People come from all over the United States to
    hunt our gigantic whitetail and mule deer.

There are numerous places to hunt pheasant and
they can be found around the county.
Kiowa County is popular for its abundant amount
of snow geese.

Hunting Information
  • To obtain a license you can go to Lamar to the
    Division of Wildlife to get small game,
    waterfowl, and fishing licenses.
  • For big game licenses, you must send an
    application to the Division of Wildlife for a
    license drawing.
  • Most of the land in Kiowa County is private, but
    you can be granted permission by the landowners.
    However, there is some public land for hunters.
  • All the lakes are open to the public except
    during waterfowl seasons when there are firing
    lines around the reservoirs.

Queens Wildlife State Park
  • Every winter the Queens Wildlife State Park
    attracts hundreds of Waterfowl hunters from
    around the state. They have over 50 goose pits
    that are free of charge.

Fishing
  • Kiowa County offers a wide variety of fishing.
    There are a number of lakes, ponds, and creeks to
    fish with species such as Bass, Walleye,
    Saugeye, Crappie, Wiper, Channel Catfish, Blue
    Catfish, Drum, and other species.

  • Kiowa County contains unique wildlife for the
    area including mountain lions, bobcats, and
    occasionally a few elk.

  • It is important that we preserve what we have by
    using good conservation practices and protecting
    the wildlife.
  • Hunting is what makes Southern Colorado unique,
    and it is important that we use it to our full
    advantage.
