2Summary
- In HOOT, the main character is Roy
Eberhardt, a boy from Montana, who recently moved
to the city of Coconut Cove, Florida. When
riding the bus one day and being bullied by Dana
Matherson, Roy sees a strange running boy with no
shoes on and wants to find out about him.
Meanwhile, Leroy Brannit a.k.a. Curly, has a
vandal that is keeping him from constructing the
new Mother Paulas All-American Pancake House.
Police Officer David Delinko has been trying to
figure out the mystery of the vandal as well as
Curly. The running boys stepsister, Beatrice
Leep, later introduces Roy to the running boy,
Mullet Fingers, who turns out to be the vandal of
Mother Paulas! He did it, because right where
the restaurant is being built, are burrowing owls
that live there. Roy and Beatrice try to help
Mullet Fingers at the groundbreaking where
Kimberly Lou Dixon, the person who plays Mother
Paula on the commercials, will be. Can they save
the owls?
3Science Topic
The science topic of this book is probably
animals. I think this, because there are many
animals mentioned in this book, such as
alligators, snakes, fish, and of course,
burrowing owls. The owls were pretty much the
reason Roy and his friends tried to stop Mother
Paulas at the groundbreaking and why the book
got its name. Burrowing owls are owls that live
in nests under the ground. It is said that
people need animal research, because animals can
be used as treatments for diseases. Even with
these advancements in science, technology, and
medicine, animals cannot be replaced. It is said
that Almost 800 species of animals have gone
extinct and that more than 1,000 are endangered.
In 2007, a plan was made to protect the Northern
Spotted Owl. People shot hundreds of the
aggressive, invasive Barred Owls to protect the
Northern Spotted Owl, because the bird was a
cause for the spotted-owl being endangered. The
information on the animals was accurate and some
of the story seemed realistic, but parts like the
alligators in the port-a-potties, probably not so
realistic compared to the rest of the book
4Controversy
I dont think it is right to damage an animals
habitat to make a human habitat. I also think
its wrong to vandalize property if you dont
agree with the cause.
