5Mark 4.1-20Parable of the Sower and the Seed
6Mark 4.1-20
- 1Again he began to teach beside the sea. Such a
very large crowd gathered around him that he got
into a boat on the sea and sat there, while the
whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2He
began to teach them many things in parables, and
in his teaching he said to them
7Mark 4.1-20
- 3Listen!
- A sower went out to sow.
8Mark 4.1-20
- 4And as he sowed, some seed fell alongside the
path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Other
seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have
much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had
no depth of soil. 6And when the sun rose, it was
scorched and since it had no root, it withered
away. 7Other seed fell among thorns, and the
thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no
grain. 8Other seed fell into good soil and
brought forth grain, growing up and increasing
and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.
9Mark 4.1-20
- 9And he said,
- Let anyone with ears to hear listen!
What does it mean?
10Mark 4.1-20
- 4And as he sowed, some seed fell alongside the
path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Other
seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have
much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had
no depth of soil. 6And when the sun rose, it was
scorched and since it had no root, it withered
away. 7Other seed fell among thorns, and the
thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no
grain. 8Other seed fell into good soil and
brought forth grain, growing up and increasing
and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.
11When he was alone, those who were around him
along with the twelveasked him about the
parables.
Mark 4.9-10
9And he said, Let anyone with ears to hear
listen!
12To you has been given the secret of the
dominion of God, but for those outside,
everything comes in parables
Mark 4.11
What secret of the dominion of God? When was it
given? Does this mean that I am an outsider?
13 in order that 'they may indeed look, but not
perceive, and may indeed listen, but not
understand so that they may not turn again and
be forgiven.'"
Mark 4.12
As the reader, what is at stake? What are the
consequences of being an outsider?
14And he said to them, "Do you not understand this
parable? Then how will you understand all the
parables?
Mark 4.13
To you has been given the secret of the
dominion of God? And for those outside,
everything comes in parables?
So, then, are the disciples in or out? Am I in or
out? Was Jesus being ironic in verses 11-12?
15Mark 4.14-20
- 14The sower sows the word. 15These are the ones
on the path where the word is sown when they
hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the
word that is sown in them. 16And these are the
ones sown on rocky ground when they hear the
word, they immediately receive it with joy. 17But
they have no root, and endure only for a while
then, when trouble or persecution arises on
account of the word, immediately they fall away.
18And others are those sown among the thorns
these are the ones who hear the word, 19but the
cares of the world, and the lure of wealth, and
the desire for other things come in and choke the
word, and it yields nothing.
16Mark 4.1-20
- 20And these are the ones sown on the good soil
they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit,
thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.
As the reader, now where does this leave you?
17To you has been given the secret of the
dominion of God, but for those outside,
everything comes in parables
Mark 4.11
Who do you now understand the you to be? How do
you know if you are in or out? What is the appeal
of knowing the secret?
18In the Gospel of Mark
The DUH-sciples in Mark Will they ever learn?
19Mark 6.34As he went ashore, he saw a great
crowd and he had compassion for them, because
they were like sheep without a shepherd and he
began to teach them many things.
Mark 6.34As he went ashore, he saw a great
crowd and he had compassion for them, because
they were like sheep without a shepherd and he
20 Mark 6.35-44When it grew late, his disciples
came to him and said, "This is a deserted place,
and the hour is now very late 36 send them away
so that they may go into the surrounding country
and villages and buy something for themselves to
eat." 37 But he answered them, "You give them
something to eat." They said to him, "Are we to
go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread,
and give it to them to eat?" gtgtgt 5000 men fed
21Mark 8.1-10 Not long afterIn those days when
there was again a great crowd without anything to
eat, he called his disciples and said to them, 2
"I have compassion for the crowd, because they
have been with me now for three days and have
nothing to eat. 3 If I send them away hungry to
their homes, they will faint on the way--and some
of them have come from a great distance." 4 His
disciples replied, "How can one feed these
people with bread here in the desert?" gtgtgt 4000
people fed
22- Mark 8.1-10In those days when there was again a
great crowd without anything to eat, he called
his disciples and said to them, 2 "I have
compassion for the crowd, because they have been
with me now for three days and have nothing to
eat. 3 If I send them away hungry to their homes,
they will faint on the way--and some of them have
come from a great distance." 4 His disciples
replied, - "How can one feed these people with bread here in
the desert?" - gtgtgt 4000 people fed
23- Mark 8.13-2113 And he left them, and getting
into the boat again, he went across to the other
side. 14Now the disciples had forgotten to bring
any bread and they had only one loaf with them
in the boat. - 15 And he cautioned them, saying,
- "Watch out -- beware of the yeast of the
Pharisees and the yeast of Herod."
24- Mark 8.13-2116 They said to one another, "It is
because we have no bread." - 17 And becoming aware of it, Jesus said to them,
- "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do
you still not perceive or understand? Are your
hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes, and fail
to see? Do you have ears, and fail to hear? And
do you not remember?
25- Mark 8.13-2119 When I broke the five loaves for
the five thousand, how many baskets full of
broken pieces did you collect?" - They said to him, "Twelve."
- 20 "And the seven for the four thousand, how many
baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?" - And they said to him, "Seven."
- 21 Then he said to them,
- "Do you not yet understand?"
26- How do these two accounts of the feeding function
in the story? - How do these two accounts of a miraculous feeding
function in the discourse?

28Mark 9.35-37 and 10.13-16
- 33 Then they came to Capernaum and when he was
in the house he asked them, - "What were you arguing about on the way?"
- 34 But they were silent, for on the way they had
argued with one another who was the greatest.
29Mark 9.35-37 and 10.13-16
- 35 He sat down, called the twelve, and said to
them, - "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all
and servant of all."
30Mark 9.35-37 and 10.13-16
- 36Then he took a little child and put it among
them and taking it in his arms, he said to
them, - 37 "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name
welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes
not me but the one who sent me."
31Mark 9.35-37 and 10.13-16
- 13 People were bringing little children to him
in order that he might touch them and the
disciples
32Mark 9.35-37 and 10.13-16
- 13 People were bringing little children to him
in order that he might touch them and the
disciples spoke sternly to them.
What do you think?
33Mark 9.35-37 and 10.13-16
- 14 But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and
said to them, - "Let the little children come to me do not stop
them for it is to such as these that the
kingdom of God belongs. 15 Truly I tell you,
whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a
little child will never enter it." - 16 And he took them up in his arms, laid his
hands on them, and blessed them.
34Mark 10.15
- 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the
kingdom of God as a little child will never
enter it."
What do you understand this to mean?
35Mark 9.37
37 "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name
welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes
not me but the one who sent me."
Mark 10.15
- 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not welcome the
kingdom of God as you would welcome a little
child will never enter it."
What do you understand this to mean?

37Mark 1432-37
- 32 They went to a place called Gethsemane and he
said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." - 33 He took with him Peter and James and John,
and began to be distressed and agitated. 34
And he said to them, - "I am deeply grieved, even to death remain
here, and keep awake." - 35 And going a little farther, he threw himself
on the ground and prayed that, if it were
possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 He
said, "Abba, Father, for you all things are
possible remove this cup from me yet, not what
I want, but what you want."
38Mark 1432-37
- 37 He came and found them sleeping
- and he said to Peter,
- "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake
one hour?
39In the Gospel of Mark
Disciples in Mark Mark 834 "If any want to
become my followers, let them deny themselves
and take up their cross and follow me.
40Mark 10.46-52
- 46 They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples
and a large crowd were leaving Jericho,
Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was
sitting by the roadside. 47 When he heard that
it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out
and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he
cried out even more loudly, "Son of David, have
mercy on me!"
41Mark 10.46-52
- 48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he
cried out even more loudly, "Son of David, have
mercy on me!" 49 Jesus stood still and said,
"Call him here." And they called the blind man,
saying to him, "Take heart get up, he is calling
you." 50 So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up
and came to Jesus. 51 Then Jesus said to him,
"What do you want me to do for you?" The blind
man said to him, "My teacher, let me see again.
42Mark 10.46-52
- 52 Jesus said to him,
- "Go your faith has made you well."
- Immediately he regained his sight and followed
him on the way.
When they were approaching Jerusalem
43Disciples in Mark
- What is your overall impression of the disciples?
- Arrogant because of their relationship with Jesus
- Well-meaning but absolutely clueless
- Weak and misguided
- Good negative role models
- Projects still under Jesus development
- They just dont get it
- Pretty normal human beings
44Disciples in Mark
- The depiction of the disciples in Mark
- encourages me to be a better disciple than they
were - makes me wonder if anyone can be a true disciple
- suggests that you can really mess up and still be
a disciple of Jesus
