- ViSCos e-learning module
3Background for IUCO
- Tumaini University - Iringa University College
was established in 1994. -
- It has established four faculties offering first
and higher degrees, diplomas and certificates. -
- Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
-
- Faculty of Business and Economics
-
- Faculty of Law
-
- Faculty of Theology
4Background for IT teaching
- Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission has been
giving a lot of support for the development of
ICT at IUCO. -
- University of Joensuu and University of Southern
Denmark came afterwards to support the
development of IT teaching at Tumaini. -
- I-Blocks (small robotic legos) and other
technologies are being already used to make the
computers to appear, not as a black box, but as
something that can be controlled and understood
(opening the black box). -
- We have had also different use projects of the
I-Blocks (e.g. teaching and learning tools and
therapeutic tools for hospital and orphanage)

- ICT 205 Computer Programming, java
- for second year education students only, first
semester - ICT 215 Instructional Technology in Mathematics
Teaching - For BED students only
-
8ICT Courses we are teaching now

- For third year BED students, second semester
-
- ICT 333 Introduction to Computer Networks
- For MBA students
-
- ICT 651 Information Technology Management
- For MBA students, first semester
9Plan for the new IT Curriculum
- Our plan is to start BSc in Information
Technology on next academic year. - We need to use IT to change current patterns
and not just add the IT on top of the current
patterns
10Plan for the new IT Curriculum
- The materials should be contextualized in a way
that for instance, examples are of local origin. -
- Traditional components of the CS and Engineer
could be used from existing sources (e.g. ViSCoS
e-learning module from University of Joensuu and
some engineering Components from University of
Southern Denmark)
11Plan for the new IT Curriculum
- There should be project-based courses in the
curriculum that are linked with the local
business especially at Science Park and industry. -
- Problem-based learning should be used so first
try to solve the problem and then learn the
theory behind to solve the problem. -
- The local effort should be focused on the
contextualized courses that rise from the local
needs, example - o Combined course of IT law together with Law
- department/faculty.
- o Multimedia production course that would
develop - multimedia that is based on the local folklore.
- o Agricultural project (e.g. irrigation system)
12Planned number of students
- The target number of student should be 50.
-
- In the first year, there would be 20-30 students
in order to reduce the work load of staff. -
- In second year or third year, there will be 50
- students.
-
- Students from the programs first year could
then support the starting students in later
years.
13Student admission will be based on
- Commitment of the student is very important and
should be taken into consideration in admission. -
- Science A-levels for example, PCB or PCM
-
- Diploma or Vocational training should be taken
into consideration if they are from related
fields. -
- Mathematics is important but not a must so that
humanistic perspective should be taken into
account.
14ViSCos e- learning module
- ViSCoS project started in year 2000 in the
University of Joensuu, Department of Computer
Science. ViSCoS is based on Moodle
(www.moodle.com). - The plan is to use ViSCoS courses at Tumaini
University as a starting point for Basic
concepts of CS and Engineering
15Structure of ViSCoS courses
- ViSCoS (25 ECTS credit points) includes eight
courses - Introduction to ICT and Computing (2 ects)
- Programming, part 1 (3 ects)
- Programming, part 2 (4 ects)
- Research Fields of Computer Science (2 ects)
- Programming Project (4 ects)
- Discrete Structures (5 ects)
- Hardware, Computer Architecture and Operating
System (3 ects) - Introduction to the Ethics of Computing (2 ects)
16IT Curriculum principles
- Contextualized
-
- Problem-based projects (Problem orientation)
-
- Practically oriented
-
- Interdisciplinary
- o Engineering
- o Computer Science
- o Application domains education, agriculture,
law, business etc.
