worried very much.
3What is Bird Flu???
Bird flu Avian influenza Avian flu
- type of influenza A
- can be transmitted from live birds to people
- result in high fever, chest infection,
respiratory failure, multi-organ failure, and
death.

- 18 people were hospitalized and 6 of them died.
- 1.5 million chickens killed.
1999
- In hk, cases of avian influenza A H9N2 were
confirmed in 2 children. - Both patients recovered, and no additional cases
were confirmed.
52003 February
- After a Hong Kong family had traveled to china,
occurred avian flu H5N1 infection - One person recovered, the other died.
- infections among poultry workers and their
families were confirmed in the Netherlands - More than 80 cases of h7n7 illness were reported
and 1 patient died. - there was evidence of some humans-to-human
transmission.
- H9N2 infection was confirmed in a child in hk .
The child was hospitalized but recovered
6- About transmitting
- How is avian influenza transmitted?
- Avian influenza is transmitted from infected live
birds to humans. - Outbreaks of avian flu in poultry have recently
been reported in some Asian countries, and some
cases of human infection have been reported. - Hong Kong has an effective surveillance system
for influenza in birds and humans.
7 Who is susceptible to contracting the
disease? People in close contact with poultry
are more susceptible to contracting avian flu.
The elderly, children and people with chronic
illness have a higher risk of developing
complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
8Why bother if the H5N1 virus does not usually
infect humans? Although human-to-human
transmission is inefficient, all influenza
viruses have the ability to change genetically,
and scientists are concerned that the H5N1 virus
could one day be able to spread easily from one
person to another.
