Title: EATING DISORDERS IN CHILDREN

1
EATING DISORDERS IN CHILDREN
  • Jenni Tree
  • Society of Homeopaths
  • Conference and AGM 2007

2
Causes of eating disorders
  • An emotional state
  • Physical pathology
  • Environmental factors

3
Anorexia / Bulimia
  • 1 100/200 teenage girls suffer from anorexia.
  • 1-3100 teenage girls suffer from bulimia
  • There are 60,000 anorexics or buliminics in UK,
    of whom 10 are male.
  • Anorexia starvation, controlled eating regimes
    excessive exercise.
  • Bulimia cycles of bingeing and starving
    purging, exercising, excessive water drinking.
  • Anorexia has one of the highest death rates for
any psychiatric disorder with up to 20 of
    patients dying from the disease.

4
Chronic Fatigue Syndromeand Starvation symptoms
  • chronic tiredness,
  • exhaustion on the slightest exertion,
  • backache,
  • anxiety, depression, listlessness, indifference,
    apathy,
  • loss of appetite,
  • palpitations,
  • cramps, hair loss,
  • labile temperature, weak, spotted nails,
  • amenorrhoea in girls.

5
Kristins case in brief
  • She had headaches and nosebleeds sometimes the
    headaches for nosebleeds.
  • Her periods had stopped.
  • She suffered from anorexia since an acute fever 5
    months before.

6
Outward Bound Course
  • Chill, then a fever that remained high.
  • Muscles sore, aching, stillness.
  • She developed measles a rash over her trunk
spreading to her limbs. She scratched some of the
spots until they formed lesions with scabs.
  • Hospitalised with high fever, dry cough, and
    later the symptoms of pneumonia.
  • Delirious, muttering, for much of the time.
  • Attempts to run away.
  • Slow recovery her glands remained swollen.

7
  • Im fed up with everybody telling me what is best
for me what I should do what I should eat.
  • I dont like food, its poisonous. I feel
    poisoned when I eat it.
  • Nobody really knows what it is like to be me.
They try hard, but they arent me.

  • 8
What does it feel like to be you?
    • Poisoned, trapped, controlled, frightened, tired.
There is something in me that feels strong, as if
I can know everything all the answers to
everything. Its like I am living in another
world and trying to communicate with this one. I
feel very restless inside, as if I am running and
running, scrabbling, hiding in dark places.
    • Is that what this world is like? Tell me some
      more about this world?
    • Its always moving, flowing, thumping, pumping. I
feel like I am moving all the time, a tremor,
when I am not moving at all when I look at my
fingers. Inside there is something seething.

    9
    Whats it like?
    • Like I have ants inside. Like poison. Something
      just swishing around.
    • Poison?
    • Its powerful stuff. You dont need much. I have
to get rid of the poison food is poison. I dont
      want to eat it.

    10
Tell me about hiding in dark places.
    • It is dark and wet and hot. I feel scabby, dirty.
In the dark place it is like an engine house,
like one of those pumps, pumping water, but it is
hot, not cold water. Its like a cave. In a way
it feels safe to be in there, like I can just be
      me in there.
    • Scabby, dirty?
    • Like I feel swollen and fat, like a leech you
know, those blood-suckers. I hate being fat and
ugly. All that fat feels like poison. My mum says
I should eat. You know they put me on a drip in
hospital. I hated that. The needles.

    11
    What else do you hate?
    • Insects. Those scabby bedbugs you get when you
sleep in other peoples beds. At camp other
people popped them the fleas, and yuk, the
blood all came out. It was disgusting. I got
fleas at that camp. Well we all did.
    • Anything else you hate?
    • PE at school. Exercise. Im too tired to do PE
      now, so Im excused.
    • I hate people telling me what to do all the time.
What to study, what to eat, what to wear. I dont
have a life of my own its like Im a part of
someone elses life. I spose thats what it is
      being in a family.

    12

    Analysis
    • Poison
    • Its me and its not me.
    • I dont have a life of my own. Family. Part of
      someone elses life.
    • I can just be me in here.
    • Living in another world
    • Restless, moving, flowing, pumping, thumping,
      swishing tremor
    • Ants inside. Leech. Insects. Bedbugs. Fleas.
    • Scabby, dirty, disgusting. Swollen, fat.

    14
I want a remedy that has the following
    • Perhaps from the animal kingdom.
    • It doesnt have a life of its own, but is part of
somebody elses life perhaps a parasite or a
      symbiotic remedy.
    • It is a remedy that is living in another world.
What does this mean not on this Earth? Or
      non-human? Or living in a different time-frame?
    • It has a connection to insects, or may be an
      insect remedy.
    • It is restless in the extreme internally.
    • It dislikes external control.
    • It has a strong element of disgust.
    • It may be a poison.

    15
Typhus nosode in 30c potency, bought from
    Remedia.at in Austria.
    • This was initially given once daily for a week,
      in water.
    • It brought back the fever for a few days, after
      which the headaches stopped.
    • I encouraged Kristin to do some exercise.
Rickettsia thrives in CO2 which is the state of
the sluggish cell. Introducing Oxygen threatens
the bacillus. First of all she did just deep
breathing exercise, and then simple yoga.

    16
    Plus
    • After two weeks some soup every day, no more than
a cup at a sitting, all the nutrition, vitamins
and minerals her mother could put in it.
    • Avena Sativa 12x three times daily.
    • Improves the strength of those who have been on
an inadequate diet for a long time.
    • Old people living alone who cant be bothered to
cook for themselves, so eat out of tins.
    • Helps a sleep pattern re-establish itself, and to
      soothe the nerves.
    • Originally used to help drug addicts. So it makes
sense that it is a good remedy for an anorexic
      too.

    17

    Sugar consumption
    • 1700 A.D. 2 kilos per head per year
    • 2000 A.D. 50 kilos per head this includes
      every child! per year.
    • UNBELIEVABLE??
    • ADDICTION IS EASY.

    45
    The biochemistry of sugar
    • C12H22O11
    • A disaccharide of glucose and fructose Sucrose
    • All edible plants contain fibre, protein, fat,
      starch and sugar.
    • Fibre starch ? sugar energy
    • Refined sugar is almost pure sucrose.

    46
    Sucrose alters the metabolism
    • In digesting a fruit, the body has to work to
      make the sugars available.
    • By eating chocolate, sweets, cakes and drinking
coca cola or soft fizzy drinks, the energy is
available in a rush instead of a drip, and the
stomach has less work to do.
    • The sugar then meets the bodys energy
requirements and the rest of the food becomes
      simply the vehicle.

    47
    Enzyme inhibition?chemical addiction
    • If energy needs are met by sugar, the body stops
      producing starch- and fibre-converting enzymes.
Then we can no longer digest these.
    • So food industries reduce the fibre content in
      prepared foods.
    • The addict/victim becomes hooked on a constant
flow of fast sugar. This is a chemical addiction.

    48
    Sugar or fibre?Feast or famine?
    • In the face of high consumption of white sugar,
the enzymes required to digest wholemeal bread
are absent, since they are killed by the sugar.
    • If you eat enough dietary fibre, you dont crave
      sugar.
    • If you eat both sugar and fibre you gain weight.

    49
