Title: Somebody, something anybody, anything nobody, nothing

1
Somebody, something anybody, anything nobody,
nothing
2
When do we use somebody, something anybody,
anything and nobody, nothing?
3
  • We can use some, any and no with body and
  • thing to form indefinite pronouns.
  • We use indefinite pronouns to refer to people and
things without saying exactly who or what they
    are.
  • As with other pronouns, indefinite pronouns can
replace nouns as subjects or objects in a
    sentence.

We can also use some, any and no with one.
Someone, anyone and no one have the same meaning
as somebody, anybody and nobody.
Note
4
Some body, thing
We usually use somebody and something in positive
statements.
Somebody brought a pet hamster to school. I have
something to tell you.
5
Any body, thing
We usually use anybody and anything in negative
statements and questions.
I dont think anybody in our class likes
snakes. Does anybody have a parrot as a
pet? There isnt anything under the sofa. Is
there anything I can do to help?
6
No body, thing
We usually use nobody and nothing when the number
is zero.
Nobody answered the phone. I have nothing to do
tonight.
7
Practice
Complete the story with the correct indefinite
pronouns.

Rita and Claire were walking back from school one
day when Rita suddenly stopped. Did you hear
(anything / nothing) just now? she said. I
thought I heard (anything / something) moving in
those bushes. I didnt hear (anything /
nothing). You must be imagining things! said
Claire. Rita walked over to the bushes. At
first, she thought her sister was right and there
was (anything / nothing) there. Then, all of a
sudden, (nothing / something) moved towards her.
9
Look, Claire! Its a kitten! said Rita. Its
so cute. Do you think it belongs to (anybody /
nobody)? Well, (anyone / someone) may have
dumped it out here, Claire said. How cruel!
What should we do now? asked Rita. Well, lets
take it home. If were lucky and (no one /
someone) claims it, Mum may let us keep
it as a pet, Claire said. I really hope so!
said Rita happily.
