Title: Milibars

1
Milibars
  • A unit of measuring air pressure abbreviated
(mb). Low mb means bad weather, high mb means
    good weather.
  • Key Word mb
  • Think air pressure

2
Air Pressure
  • The pressure or weight of the air above you.
  • Key Word weight
  • Think Air is not weightless.

3
Pressure Gradient
  • The change in air pressure (weight) divided by
    the distance.
  • Or
  • (change in milibars/distance)
  • Key Word Slope
  • Think low slope is slow change, low gradient

4
Barometric Trend
  • A description of how the pressure is changing
    over time (rising/falling/steady)
  • Key Word Pressure change
  • Think Rising, good weather, dropping bad.

5
Isobars
  • Lines connecting locations with the same pressure
    (measured in milibars).
  • Key Word Equal Pressure
  • Think Contour Lines

6
Sustained Winds
  • Winds Maintaining, or continuing at a certain
    speed without letting up.
  • Key Word kept up
  • Think Winds needed to make a wind turbine spin
    all the time

7
Flooding
  • Over-bank flow of water from a lake, stream,
    ocean or river.
  • Key Word overflows
  • Think overfilled cup

8
Fresh water flooding
  • Flooding that occurs due to heavy rain fall
    related to a hurricane.
  • Key Word Flooding
  • Think Normanskill after a heavy rain.

9
Levee
  • A pile of earth along side a river or on a coast
line to prevent rising water from flooding
    surrounding area.
  • Key Word Dam
  • Think Dam along the sides of a river

10
Watch
  • Typically refers to an advisory issued to
indicate that conditions are favorable for the
    development of dangerous conditions weather
  • Key Word Possible
  • Think Winter Storm Watch, it MIGHT snow a lot

11
Warning
  • Refers to a warning of dangerous conditions
expected to occur or are already occurring.
  • Key Word Will happen
  • Think Winter storm warnings, mean it will snow a
    lot

12
Mandatory Evacuation
  • Residents of an area are told to leave, and can
be removed by force by law enforcement.
  • Key Word Evacuate
  • Think Everyone has to leave

13
Voluntary Evacuation
  • Residents are asked to leave, but are not removed
    by force.
  • Key Word Asked
  • Think Some leave, some stay

14
Saffir-Simpson Scale
  • A way of measuring hurricane strength base on
wind speed, storm surge and air pressure.
  • Key Word Strength
  • Think Big number, Big strength.

15
Storm Track
  • The path followed by the centre of a low pressure
system or cyclone over a given period of time,
    usually its lifetime.
  • Key Word Path
  • Think Path followed by storm

16
Tropical Depression
  • A cluster of thunderstorms forming over the
ocean, that join in to one low pressure system.
  • Key Word Group
  • Think Baby Hurricane

17
Tropical Storm
  • A cyclonic storm having winds ranging from
    approximately 48 to 121 kilometers (30 to 75
    miles) per hour
  • Key Word Cyclonic
  • Think Toddler Hurricane

18
Ocean Basin
  • Saucer-like depressions of the seabed, covered by
an ocean, named for the ocean covering them
  • Key Word Sink(basin)
  • Think Name of the ocean in that area

19
Hurricane
  • A cyclonic storm with especially in the Atlantic
winds of 74 miles (119 kilometers) per hour or
    greater that occurs
  • Key Word Cyclonic
  • Think Spinning clothes in a washing machine,
    enormous in size

20
Typhoon
  • A hurricane that is occurring in the Pacific
    Ocean
  • Key Word Pacific Hurricane
  • Think Hurricane

Japan
21
Cyclone
  • A hurricane in the Indian Ocean
  • Key Word Indian Hurricane
  • Think Hurricane

22
Storm Surge
  • water that is pushed toward the shore by the
force of the winds swirling around the storm
  • Key Word Wave
  • Think Miniature Tsunami

23
Hurricane Eye
  • The center point of rotation for a hurricane.
Very clear skies and calm weather located here.
  • Key Word Middle
  • Think Clear, cloudless day with no wind.

24
Eye Wall
  • just outside of the eye is the eye wall. This is
the location within a hurricane where the most
damaging winds and intense rainfall is found
  • Key Word Wall
  • Think The Wall divides the outside of the storm
    from the calm eye
