Ancient Civilizations

Geography is integrated into the study of all the
ancient civilizations.

• Vocabulary
• Independent Reading(with a focus on reading
  strategies)
• Class novels

Language Arts - writing
WRITERS WORKSHOP MODEL

• Multiple Genre Focus (expository, literary
  response, fictional, poetry, memoir)
• Students draw on life experiences for writing
  topics
• Student/Teacher conferencing
• Mini-lessons are based on student need or teacher
  observation

My expectations for your child

• Give their best effort, and try everything
• Communicate with me when problems arise
• Following directions
• Work is turned in completely and in a timely
  manner
• Bring a positive attitude whenever possible
• Respect for teacher, self, and others
• Academic integrity

Grading/Organization

• Emphasis on consistent, thorough, timely work
• Homework passes buy students one extra day
• Keep all graded work at home (NOT in binder)
• Clear and organized planner/binder
• Check website if planner is not written in
  completely
• Online grading updates - goal is every two weeks
• Very few opportunities for extra credit

How you can help?

• Regularly check/discuss the planner
• Encourage organization the night before
• Weekly clean-out/organization of binder/backpack
• Communicate - stay informed and ask questions
• Set aside time and place for homework
• Help your child set/stick to timelines for
  long-term projects
• Within reason, support due dates and teacher
  decisions
