  • I have lots of courage, I always feel so strong
and as if I can bear a great deal, I feel so free

it, because I dont think I shall easily bow down
before the blows that inevitably come to
    everyone.
  • What needed to be in place prior to the student

Summer 1944
  • I have lots of courage, I always feel so strong
and as if I can bear a great deal, I feel so free
and so young! I was glad when I first realized
it, because I dont think I shall easily bow down
before the blows that inevitably come to everyone
    (Frank 1993, 260).
  • What needed to be in place prior to the student
    writing and expressing these feelings?
  • How does this relate to yesterdays session?

6
Dont adults need charismatic adults?
  • Dr. Lisa Berkman
  • 7,000 residents/nine years
  • Interviewed to assess connectedness
  • Examined each persons risk of dying
  • Most isolated/three times more likely

7
  • Protective nature of connections was
demonstrated to operate at all ages (Hallowell
    1999, xvi).
  • Even with health risks, poor health at start of
study lack of reliance on health services,
people with strong social ties lived
    significantly longer

8
Dr. Hallowell, Connect
  • To gain the benefits of connection, it didnt
matter what kind of connection a person had. For
example, you could live alone, but have frequent
contact with friends or relatives, and be
protected. Or you could belong to various
voluntary organizations, but not participate in
any religious activity, and still be protected
the key to gaining the benefits of connection was
to have several kinds of connections, but the
kinds could vary from one person to the next
    (xvi).

9
