3Human right film in Africas context
- In Africa there is a shortfall in production of
documentary films and fiction on the topic of
human rights. This means that films produced by
Africa filmmakers and distributed in Africa are
still very low. Why?
4Human right film in Africas context
- During a long time, films producers on the
violation of human rights are coming from the
outside. - Many films dealing with human rights in Africa
are produced by Western filmmakers. Many
filmmakers dare not overly focus on topics
related to politics and especially human rights,
on the grounds that censorship is a constant and
pervasive. - This censorship is even present in festivals as
Fespaco, Carthage where films were denied because
politically incorrect
5- Few daring filmmakers are beginning to produce
beautiful movies. Today cinematographic industry
is commit to denounce violations of citizens'
rights, defend human rights across Africa, But
most of the films produced by African directors,
financing coming from outside. - Africa filmmakers who want to make movies too
sensitive are forced to find outside support. - Funding for the production and distribution of
films by African directors are provided by the
North.
6Some experiences with their difficulties from
Africans films on human right
- Yet, there are many human on violations that
filmmakers are required to update. - Wars create numerous chances to deny rights to
life, freedom of expression. Poverty is a fertile
ground for all sorts of crime (drug trafficking,
firearms, corruption, etc.). Any things that we
filmmakers should set the goal of their camera.
7Some experiences with their difficulties from
Africans films on human right
- "African filmmaker who point on human right
became the black cheep of some African
governments that were pressuring France (main
provider of funds), accusing him of making"
revolutionary. - Thus Cameroon, in a letter from its ambassador to
Paris, asked the Department of cooperation not to
fund "The Price of Freedom" (1978) by Dikongué
Pipa. - Even attitude of the Malian government against
the film "Den" Muso Cissé. Even censure against
the film "Faces of Women" by Désiré Ecaré, banned
in the country, Côte d'Ivoire
8- The french filmmaker, René Vautier, with his film
"50" Africa was censored a long time in French.
He went in Africa for a film command on the
lives of blacks on behalf of a syndicate of
french teacher. Then he discovered a different
reality and deflects the subject. Thus, He wants
to show the violation of human rights by the
colonizers on indigenous peoples, the French
authorities of the time do everything to prevent
his film project to succeed.
