  research modeled on the first SHRP

• Administered by TRB in cooperation with AASHTO
  and FHWA
• Integrates multiple fields of study to address
  critical needs

Safety

• Goal to prevent or reduce the severity of
  highway crashes by understanding driver behavior.
• Use of vehicle-based and site-based technologies
  to gather pre-crash, crash, and exposure data.

Renewal

• Goal to renew aging infrastructure through rapid
  design and construction methods that cause
  minimal disruption and produce long-lived
  facilities.
• Integrated approach involving engineering,
  finance, contracting, planning, safety,
  maintenance, customer relations.

Reliability

• Goal to reduce congestion through incident
  reduction, management, response, and mitigation.
• Integrated approach involving data, analysis,
  institutional architectures, tools, and
  operational strategies.

Capacity

• Goals to integrate mobility, economic,
  environmental, and community needs into the
  planning and design of new highway capacity.
• Systems approach involving fundamental knowledge,
  data, tools, institutional issues.
