• To refer to habitual action

• To refer to mental activity in progress

• To refer to future action when a future time is
  clearly stated.

The uses of perfect tenses

• To indicate something that occurred at some
  unspecified time in the past.
• Have you seen that movie yet?
• To indicate that activities occurred more than
  once in the past
• I have met him several times.

• To indicate that something began in the past and
  continued right up to now
• We have known each other for a long time.
• To indicate that an activity will occur and will
  be completed by a certain time in the future.
  (With this tense, the specific time in the future
  must be stated.)
• I will have completed the renovation of our house
  by November.

• To indicate an action that is occurring right
  now.
• Shes cooking the dinner now.
• To emphasize the idea that a state or action is
  not permanent.
• She writes articles for a film magazine
• She is writing an article for a film magazine.

• To indicate a future plan
• Were flying to Korea next week.
• Were going to the theater tonight.
• To indicate an activity will be in progress or
  for a long time at a specific time in the future.
• Ill be watching Cheers at nine oclock
  tonight.
• They will be working all day on Sunday.

• To emphasize that the length of time an activity
  in progress
• I have been waiting here for two hours. (Up until
  now I am still waiting.
• By next August, we will have been living in this
  house for twenty-five years.
