2Site Background
- The Next head office is located on Desford Road
in Enderby - In addition to the head office operations, the
site is home to the Next Directory call centre - The site is currently occupied by some 2550 staff
- It has 1468 car parking spaces
3Travel Plan Timeline
- 2002 Next Directory move from Leicester City
Centre to Enderby. Together with increased
trading activity and an associated employment
drive this increases overall staffing numbers at
the site - 2002- Increased staffing numbers and a heavy
reliance upon the car increases the need for
additional car parking, the planning application
for which was supported by the development of a
travel plan - 2005 A planning application to surface areas of
overspill car parking is supported by a revised
and updated travel plan

- 2002 Prior to the introduction of travel
planning the relocation of the Next Directory
operations was accompanied by a major expansion
of the company bus service to the City Centre,
from 5 buses a day (Mon Fri), to 15 buses a day
(Mon Fri) plus 3 buses a day (Sat Sun)

- 2005 Present Additional Measures
- A new car share scheme has introduced and
launched with the benefit of a free prize draw to
win an i-pod - On site traffic calming measures have been
introduced - The company bus service is continually reviewed
and amended to facilitate seasonal demand - A range of measures have been introduced to
reduce the need for staff to travel, including
an on-site cash machine, 2 restaurants, coffee
shop, dry cleaning service, post office,
convenience items - The introduction of an additional 22 cycle spaces
- The introduction of an additional 3 showers and 3
lockers - Further car share promotional schemes

- Day to day management of the travel plan is
carried out directly by Next, with advice and
assistance where necessary from TPS
20Travel Plan Monitoring
- A requirement of both the 2002 and 2005 travel
plans was for Next to carry out an annual staff
travel survey - To facilitate this requirement Next purchased an
online survey management package - These surveys show the modal split for the past 3
years to be -
21Travel Plan Monitoring
- Travel plan monitoring has highlighted the
following - Positives
- A reduction in single occupancy car journeys of
6.4 has been achieved - Awareness of the travel plan increased from 66.3
to 76.8 following the start of the marketing
campaign - Of those staff who could be expected to walk (2
of staff live with 3km), 85 do so -
- Negatives
- Car usage is still high
- The percentage of staff travelling by public
transport and bike remains especially low
22The Future
- Travel Plan Scope
- The linkages between travel planning and CSR will
be investigated and pursued - The expansion of the travel plan to include
business travel planning will be investigated - Travel Plan Measures
- The opportunity to further develop a range of
travel plan measures through joint working with
other local employers will be investigated and
pursued - These measures are likely to include improved
bus service provision, public transport discount
opportunities, connections to rail services,
improved provision of travel information
