THEORIES THAT INFORM LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
  • 1. Maslows Hierarchy of Human Needs Theory
    (1968)
  • 4 lower-level, deficiency needs survival,
    safety, self-esteem, belonging
  • Motivation to fulfill decreases when these needs
    are satisfied
  • 3 higher-level, being needs intellectual
    achievement, aesthetic appreciation,
    self-actualization
  • Motivation increases seeks further fulfillment
    when these needs are met

  • 2. LOCUS OF CONTROL THEORY
  • An internal locus of control is correlated w/
    many socially desirable variables, such as taking
    responsibility for ones own actions, being
    independent, exhibiting greater self-control,
    persisting in challenging situations

  • Understanding the concept of morality in terms of
    influencing others (an important leadership
    aspect) requires constant attention to ethics as
    a component of responsible leadership
