2- Son of a prosperous peasant, Mao was born in
Hunan province on December 26, 1893. - Although he worked in the fields from an early
age, Mao also received enough schooling to
develop an interest in learning. This drew him
back to school at age 16.
3- Next, he worked at various teaching jobs and
became active in radical student groups.
4- Soon afterward, he began to develop his theory of
the revolutionary potential of the peasantry - Mao Tse Tung saw socialism as an answer to
China's problems.
5- The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution was a
revolutionary upsurge by Chinese students and
workers against the bureaucrats of the Chinese
Communist Party.
6The Long March was a massive military retreat
undertaken by the Chinese Communist Army to evade
the pursuit of the Kuomintang army. The Communist
Army of the Chinese Soviet Republic, led by Mao
Zedong and Zhou Enlai, was on the brink of
complete annihilation by Chiang Kai-Shek's troops
in jiangxi Province in October 1934
7The communists escaped in circling retreat to the
north, which ultimately covered some 8000km (4960
miles) over 370 days. The route branched through
some of the most difficult terrain of western
China and arrived 9600km (5952 miles) west, then
north, to Shaanxi. (In 2003, Ed Jocelyn and Andy
McEwan retraced the route in 384 days and
estimated it was about 6000 km (3700 miles) long.
8- Mao is widely credited for creating a mostly
unified China free of foreign domination for the
first time. - Mao has also been criticized for the famine of
19581961 and the violence of the Cultural
Revolution.
9- Mao Zedong is commonly referred to as Chairman
Mao - Mao was commonly known in China as the "Four
Greats" "Great Teacher, Great Leader, Great
Supreme Commander, Great Helmsman
