Title: THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

1
THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
  • What is it and how do we take care of it?

2
What is the digestive system?
  • It is a complex series of organs and glands that
    processes food.
  • In order to use the food we eat, our bodies must
break down the food into smaller molecules that
    must be processed.
  • Our bodies excrete the waste.
  • The digestive system is a long, twisting tube
that runs from the mouth to the anus.
  • It produces or stores digestive chemicals.

3
WHERE DOES IT ALL BEGIN?
  • The mouth.
  • Once food is broken down by chewing the digestion
    has

BEGUN
4
From the mouth to the esophagus!
  • The chewing is complete and the food is
    swallowed.
  • The esophagus uses muscles called PERISTALSIS.
  • These muscles help the food travel from the
    esophagus to the stomach.

5
The chewed food has made it to the stomach.
  • The food is churned while in the stomach.
  • While churning the food is soaked in a liquid
    acid called GASTRIC ACID.
  • The food is now called CHYME, food soaked in
    gastric acid.

6
The next stops are the small and large intestine.
  • The small intestine continues to break down the
    food.
  • Bile that is produced in the liver and stored in
the pancreas helps break the food down.
  • The large intestine separates some of the water
    and electrolytes from the food.
  • There are several microbes in the large intestine
that help in the process of digestion.

7
Where does it all end?
  • The anus.
  • The waste is stored in the rectum and then
excreted when you go to the bathroom.
