Digestive System
  • 3 Functions
  • Digestion- Breaks down food into simpler
    substances (Nutrients)
  • Absorption- Nutrients are absorbed into the blood
    and carried throughout the body
  • Elimination- Wastes are eliminated from the body

4
Digestive System Diagram
5
2 Types of Digestion
  • Mechanical
  • Chemical

6
The Mouth
  • Mechanical Digestion- Teeth
  • Chemical Digestion- Saliva
  • Ptyalin- Chemical in Saliva that breaks down
    starches

7
Epiglottis
  • Seals off your windpipe when you swallow food

8
Esophagus
  • A muscular tube that connects the mouth to
    stomach
  • Peristalsis- Involuntary muscular contractions
the push food toward the stomach

9
Stomach
  • J shaped organ located in the abdomen where the
    majority of mechanical digestion occurs.

10
Stomach
  • Mechanical Digestion- Churning motion like a
    washing machine
  • Chemical Digestion- (Gastric Juice) Pepsin and
    Rennin digest Proteins

11
Guided Practice
  • Work on numbers 1-6 ONLY on page 7 in your
    packet.

13
Final Digestion and Absorption
  • Small Intestine- Part of the digestive system
where the majority of chemical digestion takes
place, as well as the absorption of nutrients

14
Liver
  • The largest and heaviest organ inside the body
    that produces Bile.
  • Bile- Chemical made by the liver that breaks down
    fats. (Stored in gall bladder.)

15
Pancreas
  • Triangular shaped organ that make pancreatic
juices, which are enzymes that break down
    starches, proteins, and fats.

16
Absorption in the Small Intestine
  • Villi- Fingerlike projections that increase
surface area in the small intestine for the
    absorption of nutrients.

17
Elimination
  • Large Intestine- Where water is absorbed and
    waste is readied for elimination.
  • Rectum- A short tube at the end of the large
intestine where solid waste is stored
  • Anus- a Muscular opening at the end of the rectum
where waste is eliminated from the body

18
Guided Practice
  • Complete page 7 in your packet.
  • WORD BANK
  • Liver Small Intestine Ptyalin Esophagus
  • Enzymes Stomach Peristalsis Pepsin
  • Complete page 8 in your packet
