  • A teaching module on poetry

Where? When?What?
  • I teach in a Technical High School ( ITAS
    Deledda) in Trieste
  • This module is planned for a second year class
  • It may be carried out in the second part of the
    year
  • It is a part of a macro-unit on poetry
  • The first part of the macro unit will be
    developed in the Italian language
  • This Clil module on poetry consists of two parts

What? ( continues)
  • in the first part, students will be asked to
    create a semantic area in English around a word,
    as water, seaand to create metaphors on some
    abstract concepts ( two or three sessions)
  • The second part is dedicated to explain the
    message of some poems and to make a comparison
    between them ( three hours )
  • Students will be asked to complete some grids or
    cloze tests in order to understand the topics and
    the message of the poems

Why?
  • The purpose of this unit is to improve some
    abilities in the students
  • To learn some technical terms both in Italian and
    in English
  • To use freely their imagination to create
    metaphors, using English terms
  • To read, analyse and understand some simple
    poems, and to compare them to similar poems in
    Italian
  • To write some poems in English

How?
  • I ll start my Clil-unit after three/four
    lessons in which Ill have already introduced the
    contents of the unit on poetry and Ill have
    given some essential and general concepts about
    it
  • Materials which will be used to organise the
    lesson are brain storming technique, power
    point presentation, texts,grids
  • Students will practice on true/false tests, on
    cloze tests and on matching answers
  • Finally, students will be stimulated to write
    some short poems in English

Conclusions
  • I hope that this first attempt will be satisfying
    to me and to my class for many reasons
  • students and I will be stimulated to communicate
    and to express ourselves in English, without
    bothering about grammar
  • the exercises and some tests will be proposed in
    a cooperative- learning situation
  • students will improve their abilities in
    communication and in understanding each other
  • students will be encouraged to catch and to
    express the central meaning of an oral or written
    text
