3Pulp Mill transport task likely impact
- Approach
- Analysis examines
- Most likely wood supply (Gunns anticipated
scenario) and log truck movements against overall
freight task. - Pulp Mill transport task (truck movements) under
two strategies road only and road/rail.
3
Department of Infrastructure, Energy and
Resources
4Wood supply forecast volumes and source
- No change to Gunns state-wide overall harvesting
levels - Pulp Mill requires 2.9M 4M tonnes per year.
- Analysis shows increased volume redirected to
Pulp Mill from woodchip mills. - Consequently pattern of transport between the
regions will change - North west to Pulp Mill 0.36M tonnes
(redirected), equivalent to 95 truck movements
per day - South to Pulp Mill 0.33M tonnes (redirected),
equivalent to 90 truck movements per day - North east (no change).

Resources
5Transport task road only strategy
- Parts of the road network will experience an
increase in truck movements - Bass and Midland Highway will carry the majority
of additional log trucks - high standard freight
roads, increase well within capacity. - Biralee/Frankford/West Tamar/Batman Highway.
- East Tamar Highway.
- Also
- Bridport Main Road (not caused by pulp mill).

Resources
6Government action road only strategy
- 72M allocated to East Tamar Hwy.
- Frankford/West Tamar/Batman Hwy - review needs
and planning brought forward. - Bridport Main Road review needs and planning
brought forward. - 4 years for infrastructure improvements to be in
place.
6

Resources
7Transport task road rail strategy (preferred)
- Gunns preferred transport strategy is to use
rail from the north west and south to Longreach. - Rail will move almost 0.70M tonnes per year to
the pulp mill the equivalent of 185 truck
trips/day. - Parts of the road network will experience a
decrease in truck volumes - All wood supply from the north east will continue
to be moved by road.
7
Department of Infrastructure, Energy and
Resources
8Government action road rail strategy
- Rail Governments preferred option.
- 60M upgrades needed
- Derwent Valley Line Boyer to Karanja.
- North West Line Burnie to Wiltshire.
- 24M upgrades - Antill Ponds to Colebrook.
- Main line productivity improvements 31.6M.
- Brighton Transport Hub planning, design and
land acquisition underway.

Resources
9Pulp Mill traffic management and road access
- Pulp Mill will increase traffic at Longreach and
landfill site accesses. - Pulp Mill permit requires a grade separated
interchange. - General traffic management issues covered in DIER
Schedules.Â

10Safety

Code. - The Code will address
- vehicle stability (including SRT)
- driver recruitment, induction, training and
education - purchase of safer vehicles
- road worthiness and vehicle maintenance
- load restraint
- adopting new technology
