2
Overview
  • Virtual Outreach is a Wiki-formatted telemedicine
    tool that began as a post-surgical follow-up
    application for international medical missions.
  • The initial goal was to establish follow-up when
    the operating team departed.

3
Implementation
  • Prior to the mission, a secure, password
protected and monitored website was populated
    with blank patient templates.

4
Mission Planning
5
Mission Use
  • During the mission, patient templates were
    updated with demographic information and
    pre-operative images

6
Demonstration
7
Mission Use
  • On discharge, patients were asked to return to
the clinic in 6-weeks so pictures could be taken
and the progress monitored. Local surgeons then
uploaded comments, complications, and images to
    the site.

8
Follow Up
9
Follow Up
  • When patient templates were updated, members of
the surgical team received automated emails to
alert them to follow up information.
  • Initial implementation allowed for 92 follow up
of patients with the ability to report quality,
as well as number of procedures.

10
Other Capabilities
  • System allows for the free flow of information
between providers in a simple to use and easily
    updated manner.
  • Within the website, additional features can be
    used in a secure environment
  • Transmission of audio, video, and images
  • Discussion boards with each template
  • Live chat with each template

11
Current Direction
  • Custom software has been developed and additional
    web-hosting space has been obtained
  • We are currently seeking future applications,
    projects, and collaboration with other
    institutions
  • The goal is to offer the software free to those
interested in using Wiki-based telemedicine to
improve the quality and access to care at home
    and abroad

12
Current Projects
  • Wright State Wound Care seeks to implement
Wiki-based telemedicine to bridge the gap between
wound care specialists and nursing home patients
    in the Dayton-Area.
