Purpose
  • A personal development programme focussing on
    inter-personal skills, team building (working
    together), individual responsibility,
    communication enhancing confidence.
  • Spring Term 2004 is a pilot project, with 6
    Islington secondary schools, focussing on boys
    only.
  • From the summer term 2004, the project is
    expected to expand to 9 schools, for both
    genders.
  • To target ethnic minorities under-achieving boys

Aim
  • To raise awareness of careers opportunities in
    the modern-day Royal Navy
  • To enhance participants personal and social
    skills and raise aspirations.

Course Structure
  • A 10 week course starting from 19th January 2004
  • 9 weeks of 2 hours per week guided learning at
    your school
  • A 3 day Captive Visit (Wednesday to Friday)
  • Delivered by 2 person training team of ex-Navy
    personnel.
  • Course Content can be designed to fit into the KS
    4 Citizenship curriculum, covering
  • Topical and political issues relating to defence
  • Diversity
  • Taking community, social and individual
    responsibility
  • Developing skills of participation
  • Group size 12-15, with 12 attending the visit

Captive Visits
  • Day 1
  • Travel from school to Portsmouth
  • Kit issue
  • Look-see visit of HMS Excellent, HMS
    Collingwood, HMS Nelson HMS Temeraire
  • Supper in the ratings mess
  • Depart for the Isle of Wight.

  • Day 2
  • Experience a day in the life of a new Naval
    recruit
  • Activities include
  • Command Tasks
  • Team Building
  • Fitness Assessment
  • Table top problem solving exercises
  • At the end of the day, participants enjoy a
    barbeque and prize giving evening.

  • Day 3
  • Return to Portsmouth, bright and early!
  • Arrive at the historic dockyard to experience
    Action Stations
  • Stimulating, interactive learning environment
  • Team Challenge
  • Build and launch a water rocket
  • Return Kit and travel back to school.

  • Commitment from participating schools
  • A member of staff to attend the 3 day Captive
    Visit
  • Groups of suitable pupils identified
  • Programme incorporated into timetable
