• To enhance the effectiveness of information

  EAA Mission

  on the developments in electric automobile

Future of Transportation
In the coming decades, transportation in the U.S.
is expected to change radically in response to
environmental constraints, fluctuating oil
availability and economic factors.

The transportation systems that emerge in the
21st century will be defined largely by the
choices, skills and imaginations of todays youth.

As scientists and engineers, they will develop
new vehicle and fuel technologies. As citizens,
they will make decisions balancing mobility,
environmental, and economic needs.

Students are encouraged to consider the influence
of transportation on social and economic
patterns, energy use and the environment. JSS is
an excellent opportunity to combine the teaching
of scientific and social principles in an
atmosphere of fun and excitement.

History of the Junior Solar Sprint

• 1990 - First JSS was held at Argonne National Lab
  with 6 local schools
• 1991 Grew to 10 regional competitions. DOE also
  funded a national JSS that was held on the Mall
  in Washington, D.C.
• 1992 15 regional competitions
• 1993 20 regional competitions
• 1994 DOE designated NREL as the national
  coordinator. DOE subsidized the kit prices, the
  kits cost 15.00, schools were charged 5.00.
  Grew to 44 regional competitions
• 1995 DOE continued to subsidize the kits. NREL
  supplied to all sites student and teacher
  information. Grew to 53 regional competitions.

History of the Junior Solar Sprint

• 1996 DOE zeroed the JSS budget. Previous years
  recouped funds was sent back to the Dept. of
  Treasury. Schools were charged full price of
  19.99. 83 regional competitions.
• NREL found two manufacturers for the JSS kits
  PITSCO and Solar World. Regional competitions
  order directly from the manufacturers.
• 1997 65 regional competitions in 30 states.
  KNEX funded a 10 team national competition in
  Dallas, TX at the Science Place.
• Regional competitions have leveled out to around
  40 for the last couple of years. In 2003 there
  are 39 regional competitions in 26 states.
