2Prince Metternich
3 Prince Metternich was born into an aristocratic
family on May 15 1773.
He was born in Coblenz, Germany. He went to the
university of Strasbourg and Mainz.
In 1794 he fled to Vienna because of the French
revolution with his family. He married countess
Eleanor Kaunitz whose family was prominent at the
Austrian court.
4Metternich served the Habsburgs as an envoy to
the congress of Rastadt in 1797. Then he was the
ambassador to Saxony in 1801, Prussia in 1803,
and Napoleonic France in 1806.
Thats him!!
5In 1809 Metternich was appointed the minister of
foreign affairs for the Habsburg. He arranged the
mairrage of Marie Louise to Napoleon even though
he planned to renew war with France. Two years
later he played a leading role in planning a new
European coalition that later defeated Napoleon.

6At the congress of Vienna he accomplished many
things. He blocked Russian plans for the
annexation of the whole of Poland and Prussias
attempt to absorb Saxony. He succeeded in
creating a German confederation under Austrian
leadership but failed to achieve a similar
arrangement for Italy. He attempted but failed
to make a postwar Quadruple Alliance with Great
Britain, Russia, Prussia, and Austria, to help
prevent revolutions in Europe. He was chancellor
of the Habsburg Empire from 1821-1848, and was
able to maintain the status quo in Germany and
Italy. He was forced out of office by the
revolution in 1848. He died in Vienna on June
11, 1859.
7LIBERALISM
Metternich equally resented liberalism,
nationalism, and revolution. His ideal was a
monarchy that shared power with the traditional
privileged classes of society. He was a man of
order in an increasingly disorganized world of
rapidly changing values.
NATIONALISM
8General Aims

was more likely to side with Prussia.

- Austria was willing to renounce their claims to
the Austrian Netherlands (Belgium) to set up
strong states around French boarders, and it was
nothing but trouble since Austria acquired it. - Supported the joining of Belgium and Holland to
create the United Kingdom of the Netherlands
ruled by William of Orange.
11The German States
- Austria supported giving the territories east and
west of the Rhine River to Prussia. - He was hoping that Prussia would except the
territories east and west of the Rhine River

unions as long as Austrias monarch was in
charge.
