Beloved son of Bill and Mur Elliott, brother and
best friend to Jen Elliott.
John was named outstanding HERO by his
classmates.

What is the HERO Campaign?
  • Mission
  • To prevent drunk driving fatalities, injuries,
    and accidents nationwide by promoting the use of
    sober designated drivers and reminding the public
    to drive sober
  • and not to let friends drive drunk.

HERO Campaign Goals
  • Register one million sober designated drivers to
    end drunken driving nationwide
  • Emphasize the role of personal responsibility in
    ending drunken driving
  • Make having a designated driver as automatic as
    wearing a seatbelt
  • Partner with state and local law government,
    highway safety offices, schools and colleges,
    sports teams and licensed beverage associations

  • Promote the campaign in schools, colleges,
    businesses, bars and restaurants
  • Partner with collegiate and professional sports
    teams, including NFL and Major League Baseball
  • Launch national media campaign
  • Partner with local and state law enforcement

  • Federal Johns Law passed, August, 2005
  • Johns Law adopted in New Jersey
  • Impounds cars of DUI suspects for up to 12
    hours.
  • Hold suspects for up to 8 hours
  • Because of Johns Law 30,000 cars of suspected
    dui drivers were impounded in the State of New
    Jersey in one year

  • Variations of Johns Law adopted in Massachusetts
    and Maryland
  • Over 50 highway signs and billboards posted in
    Southern New Jersey, Philadelphia and entering
    New York City.

  • Have your municipality officials declare your
    municipality a HERO City
  • Get local schools involved
  • Encourage establishments serving alcohol to

    decals on their patrol cars

Become a HERO Municipality
  • Through an executive proclamation declare your
    town as a HERO Municipality
  • Ask your law officials to incorporate the HERO
    message into their educational and promotional
    programs
  • Encourage your citizens to be sober designated
    drivers
  • There is no cost to the Municipality

HERO Campaign Chapters at Schools and Colleges
  • Establish a committee consisting of an
    administrator, faculty member or teacher and
    interested students
  • Educate students of the importance of being or
    using a sober designated driver
  • Encourage students to add taxi numbers to their
    cell phones
  • Hold fun educational and awareness events that
    do not include alcohol

HERO Bar/Tavern Participation
  • Sign a pledge to be a HERO Establishment
  • Display HERO posters and decals reminding patrons
    to secure sober designated drivers when leaving
  • Provide free non-alcoholic drinks to sober
    designated drivers

Military Base HERO Awareness
  • Display HERO posters and materials throughout the
    base
  • Plan a 5k awareness run to coincide with the run
    held at the Naval Academy in Ensign Elliotts
    honor during March each year.
  • Get the local bars and taverns involved
  • Establish a HERO Pledge day to drive sober

  • Follow the footsteps of New Jersey, Delaware and
    Virginia in becoming a HERO State through an
    executive proclamation
  • There is no direct cost to the state
  • Use the HERO Brand and identity to make the roads
    safer in your state
  • Encourage State Trooper participation

  • Distribute authorized Hero Campaign materials
    ribbon, decals, posters.
  • Sell shirts, hats, wristbands and key chains.
  • Develop local sponsors/supporters
