What is a Watershed Plan?

• An ecosystem approach to land use planning
• A living document developed co-operatively by the
  watershed community
• An identification of the communitys vision of
  the natural environment of the future
• An identification of areas of future development
  and constraint

Why Do Watershed Planning?

• We gain a better understanding of watershed
  functions
• This information can be used to support land use
  and development decisions
• It co-ordinates resource management efforts and
  saves money
• Its fosters co-operation and community ownership
• It helps resource management agencies identify
  resources needed to meet objectives
• Fulfills RVCA objective to complete plans on
  major tribs

Why do Watershed Planning in the Rideau Lakes
Watershed?

• There are a number of issues best dealt with on a
  watershed scale
• It provides the watershed community to claim
  (own) their watershed
• Provides short and long term strategies for the
  improved health of the Rideau Lakes

What is involved in the Watershed Planning
Process?

• Define its scope
• Decide what the issues are
• Describe the present state of the watershed
• Determine the stakeholders vision
• Devise strategies to achieve that vision
• Have the local community adopt and implement the
  plan

What Can We Expect the RLWP to Do?

• Provide Watershed level recommendations to deal
  with issues e.g. reduce nutrient loadings
• Recommend dialogue needed to address issues e.g.
  form committee to apply consistent development
  policies
• Identify areas for further study e.g. groundwater
  studies needed
• Provide a strategy to improve the ecosystem

Who Will Use the RLWP?

• Municipalities in establishing rules for
  development (OP and ZBL policies)
• RVCA, MNR, MoE, etc. as it will give a
  comprehensive statement of State of Health of
  watershed and recommendations on how to improve
• Interest groups re resource management and
  recreation potential

Who Will Use RLWP?

• Members of the public. Plan will show how daily
  behaviours can influence watershed health
• Academia for areas requiring further study
• All stakeholders will find direction for improved
  ecosystem health within document
