Title: Campus Community Organizing

1
Campus Community Organizing
  • Building Power for Lasting Change in the Youth
    Movement for Clean Energy

2
  • Why do we organize?

3
  • (Organizing) builds a permanent base of people
power so that dominant financial and
institutional power can be challenged and held
accountable to values of greater social,
environment and economic justice, (and) is
    transforms individuals and communities, making
them mutually respectful co-creators of public
life rather than passive objects of decisions
    made by others.
  • Mike Miller, Organizing Training Center

Community Org. is valuable because -
  • Youre not a student forever
  • Community organizing improves your skills
  • You are part of the community!
  • There is a pressing need for support
  • You can reach a broader base
  • Diversity is good!
  • This is where the most work gets done.

5
A responsibility to Directly Impacted Communities
  • What is an impacted community?

6
Your schools consumption reaches far and wide
  • Extraction? Production?Consumption?Waste
  • Extraction (chopping trees, mining, fossil fuels)
  • Production (coal plants, paper mills)
  • Consumption (malls, university purchasing dept)
  • Waste (landfills, incinerators, mines, rivers)

Picking Your Issue is a Privilege

4 Ways to Help Communities
  • Creating Policies that Protect Communities
  • Ask is not a noun.
  • This is about building power and being firm and
    assertive with that power
  • Fighting Your Schools Polluting Facilities
  • Solidarity with impacted Communities Far from you
  • Working with Community Groups Near You

9
Lay of the Land
  • TONS of proposed projects
  • Vulnerable Communities

10
Recipes for Winning
  • Option 1 Target (often a government body)
    agrees with you
  • Option 2 Company gives up
  • You can stop a polluting policy or project if
you cut off funding, significantly delay it, or
increase the costs associated with it

11
How to get involved
  • Research your campus consumption
  • Approach a community group
  • Go to Government meetings
