3- General Theme, Layout and Audience
- The Firm
- It is clear that this film is set in the 1980s.
Immediately, there are bright and plain neon
colours, with 80s music playing in the
background. The lead character appears to be the
man in the centre, as he is bigger in size
compared to the others and is also in all red,
making him contrast well with the white
background and blue text above. - The overall homepage is quite simplistic, with
not many graphics or text visible. The main
heading attracts a lot of attention, and is the
first thing that the user sees when they open the
page. The eye then moves to the graphics below,
and then to the top left corner where they can
find icons that link to Facebook and Youtube.
From there, my eye moved past the rating that
Zoo magazine had given them (5 stars) , then to
the jukebox, the button and lastly the navigation
bar at the bottom. - The layout of this website is extremely easy to
understand. It has all been positioned in the
centre of the page and made to be symmetrical,
which looks quite professional. The amount of
special effects used on this site is minimal,
probably due to the fact that the website is
trying to look as if it has been created in the
1980s to fit in with the general theme. - The audience for this website appears to be for
people who were brought up during this time
period and could relate to it. It also aims at
those who are passionate about football, although
it is not clear that this film is about football
from this specific homepage.
- General Theme, Layout and Audience
- -Angels and Demons
- Immediately, this website creates a much more
darker and serious atmosphere, compared to that
of the Firm. The outfits and roman numerals also
suggest that it focuses a lot on the past, even
though it s a 2009 film. - What caught my attention first when I first saw
the homepage were the four main images positioned
in the centre. These are the only four colour
images, which mean that they contrast well
against the black background. As the user hovers
over these four different images, they glow
brighter and appear to get bigger as well, which
makes it easier for the user to see which section
they are looking at. - The audience for this website appears to be men
and women of an older age, such as 30-60 years.
This is due to the serious nature of the film,
and the time that it was set in,
4Sound On both of these websites, they have music
that can be heard in the background. The icons
are positioned in the top right corner on both
of these websites, which is quite a discreet
place. It means that users can turn it off if
they want to, or they can leave it playing and it
doesnt distract them from the main content of
the page. The music for The Firm consists of
songs from the 80s, which reflects the time that
this film is set in. The background colour is a
plain light blue, which adds to the simple
cartoon feel of this page. The font for the text
is sans serif, and matches the font used for the
actual title of the film, and therefore achieving
consistency. The music on the Angels and
Demons website is a lot different. It is slower
and darker, which matches the atmosphere of the
website. The font used for the Angels and
Demons text is a script font. It is very
sophisticated and elegant, which again reflects
the time that the film was set in.
Links To Other Sites Both websites have links to
other social pages. This is because many people
use these different sites, and so by advertising
them, they can appeal to a much larger target
audience. On The Firm website, they have
positioned two links in the top left corner. The
icons are the same as they are on the actual
websites, which means that users will instantly
recognise them. On this particular website, there
are links to Facebook and YouTube. The Angels
and Demons website has links to many more sites,
such as MySpace, Twitter and Delicious.
Navigation Bar The navigation bar on these sites
are both located towards the bottom of the
screen. The fonts that they have used match their
house font and style, therefore being consistent.
The Firms website consists of seven different
hyperlinks, for example the synopsis, stills from
the film, videos etc. When the user hovers over
each link, it changes colour to the films house
colours, making the website consistent. The
hyperlinks on the Angels and Demons website also
change when the user hovers over them. Instead of
changing colour, a glow appears around the word
quickly, before changing font colour from a light
blue to white.
5Other Features -The Firm Firstly, there is a
small advertisement for The Firm book. This
advert can be seen in the right third, positioned
in a star shaped box. This attracts a lot of
attention from viewers, as the red background
contrasts well against white behind. The font
used matches that of its house font, meaning
that the website appears to be
consistent. Secondly, there is a small icon
which directs users to a pop out window, where
they can then play the PacMan game. PacMan is
and extremely well known game, and was first
created in the 1980s. This fits in with the whole
theme of The Firm website, and is a playful
interactive feature to keep users entertained
when browsing the site. Lastly, three magazines
have rated the film by offering them stars. These
have been placed on the homepage to let viewers
know that this particular film has been highly
rated, persuading them more to go and see it.
Colour and Text There is a vast use of colour on
The Firm website, which is very typical of the
time that the film is set in. The page is
extremely bright and colourful, and stands out
well against the white background. This attracts
a lot of attention from users. All text is
written in a large font, which also is very
eye-catching. However, the Angels and Demons
website is quite the opposite. This website is
extremely dark and sinister, and does not really
attract much attention. The text is written in a
small font, and in a pale blue colour, again not
attracting much attention.
Other Features -Angels and Demons Firstly,
towards the bottom of the page, users can select
which country they are from. This suggests that
this film is extremely popular worldwide, as many
different versions have been created in other
languages. Secondly, there are two well known
actors in this film (Tom Hanks and Ewan
McGregor), and these two actors have both been
positioned on the homepage. This attracts a lot
of attention from users, and may possibly even
persuade them to see it if they know that famous
actors feature in it.
