Title: Osteoporosis

1
Osteoporosis
  • Alysha Novachich

2
What is it?
  • Osteoporosis is a disease where your bones become
    fragile.
  • This makes it easier for your bones to break.
  • Usually is not found until a bone breaks
  • Bones that are usually broken are in the hip,
    spine, and wrist.
  • These breaks requires hospitalization, include
major surgery, and can impair a persons ability
    to walk

3
Bones
  • Your bones are living tissue
  • Your bones
  • Provide structural support for muscles
  • Protect vital organs
  • Store calcium essential for bone density and
    strength
  • Can heal
  • Affected by diet and exercise

4
  • Until the age of 30 you build and store bone
    efficiently
  • Your bones begin to beak down faster than be bone
can be formed as you get older
  • When your ovaries stop producing estrogen
(hormone that protects against bone loss)
  • The critical years for building bone mass are
from prior to adolescence to age 30.

Who is affected?
  • Both men and women are affected by Osteoporosis.
  • Women are four times more likely to develop
    Osteoporosis
  • About two million have osteoporosis, while 12
    million are at risk

7
Fractures
  • 1 in two women and 1 in 4 men over age 50 will
have an osteoporosis frature in their lifetime
  • 1.5 million fracture annually
  • Hip fracture risk is increasing in Hispanic women
  • Fractures lower a patents quality of life

8
Cost
  • The price for your hospitals, nursing homes, and
    outpatient services from osteoporosis fractures
is about 18 billion dollars per year
  • Cost are continually rising

9
Risk Factors
  • Age (The older you are the more risk you are at)
  • Gender (Risks are greater if you a woman)
  • Family History (Risks are hereditary)
  • Race (Caucasian and Asian women are more at risk)
  • Bone Structure and Body Weight (Small boned and
thinner women are more at risk)

10
Symptoms
  • Silent disease
  • Occurs without symptoms
  • Their bones become weak and a sudden strain, bump
or fall causes a fracture ot a vertebra to
    collapse
  • Collapsed vertebra may be felt or seen in the
form of back pain, loss of height, or spinal
    deformities (kyphosis)

11
Detection
  • Tests called bone mineral density tests are done
to measure bone density in certain parts of the
    body
  • This test can
  • Detect it before a fracture occurs
  • Predict chances of fracturing in the future
  • Determine rate of bone loss

12
Prevention
  • A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D
  • Weight bearing and resistance training exercises
  • No smoking or excessive alcohol intake
  • Talking to professional about bone health
  • Bone density testing
  • Medication when appropriate
