WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? COLLEGES
  • FANS' BEHAVIOR AT GAMES
  • BECOMING INCREASINGLY FOUL
  • Whatever became of sportsmanship? Or civility?
Or respect? In far too many college basketball
arenas, those terms are yesterday's news. Fan
misbehavior has become an epidemic. What once
were good-natured fun have become over-the-top
personal attacks on college students who happen
    to play basketball.
  • Dick Jerardi, Philadelphia
  • Daily News, March 24, 2004

While support of our team may be
well-intentioned, displays of profanity
simultaneously debase our team, our athletes and
our university. Dan Mote, University of
Maryland President

in which a coach was hit with a bottle and five
people were treated at a hospital.
  • In western Pennsylvania, a parent came out of the
stands, picked up a basketball official and
body-slammed him to the court. The official was
knocked unconscious and suffered a severe
    concussion.

soccer game, other team ignored, called
unmentionable names, gave middle finger and spit
on hands before shaking hands of home team.

  • NYS Youth Soccer Referee
  • Ive seen parents yell at kids (8,9,10 years
old) for not passing ball to their child for
missing shots for committing fouls. I have seen
coaches turn their backs on kids after letting
    goals in.
