Nietzsche and the Age of Anxiety

• Nietzsche believed that the last Christian died
  on the cross and that Christianity is a ideology
  set forth by churches
• He also believed that developments in science and
  increased secularism in Europe had effectively
  killed God
• The Nazis used his work, Ubermensch, as
  propaganda for a master race that would dominate
  all other races

• He was looked to as an inspiration for German
  militarism by World War I
• During the Dreyfus Affair in France, anti-Semites
  labeled those who defended Alfred Dreyfus as
  Neitzscheans
• Phrases such as Will to Power were adopted by
  Nazis this hurt Neitzsches reputation and
  caused him to be ignored by American and British
  philosophers until 1950
